i understand this is a mustang forum but maybe yall can help any way. i need some information on the differences between 86 and 87 turbo coupe automatic transmissions. i know the 86 came with a C3 and the 87 came with the a4ld but im trying to figure out how difficult it would be to put a A4LD in a TC that came with a C3. ive figured out that the A4LD was a C3 with an overdrive gear and some electronic control... if any one can help id appreciate it.
I have been researching this for my 86 Capri, which has the C3. I have found that it would be MUCH easier to just put a 5 speed in and be done with it. The largest hang up with the whole process is that the A4LD has a locking torque converter that is controlled by the computer as to when it locks and unlocks. There is really no safe or reliable way to replicate it. If you just use a switch, then if you forget to unlock it, you will stall the car. You can make a brake switch interruptor of some sort, but that's boat loads of headaches, wiring, and time. And you'd still end up having to flick switches to activate it. I would say either stick with the C3 (TransGo does make a shift improver kit for them) or put a T5 5 speed in there.
forget about the a4ld they are crap I'm on my second one in two years they brake down all the time, nothing but problems unless you want to spend $500 on an external tranny cooler and tranny upgrade. for that you can swap a t-5 and be done with it mike
