Bench Testing an oil pump I have an oil pump in my 2.3T on the stand and I'm unsure about it's condition. Everything looked good internally, and the oil pump passes the "looks good" visual inspection. But I'm always paranoid so I was wondering if there is a way to bench test these oil pumps. It's a really low mileage block, and don't want to spend the money on the pump if i dont have to. Whats the failure rate on the factory pumps anyways, is it rare to have to replace it, can if be done with the engine in the car if I have to at a later date. Thanks Jeff
I don't hear about oil pumps failing very often, and I have never had mine fail. I would say if the engine it was taken from didn't not suffer a death of shredding metal, it will be fine. It is a lot more common to clog up the pick up screen, or when people install a 'performence' oil pump, they have big problems with eating distributer gears.
I went to the ford dealership and leafed through their shop manual and everything was within the specifications. Thanks for the help, the ford tech basically quoted what you said. Jeff
