Ok so, I just wanted to build up a box for 2 10" subs, and wanted to know what is the best material to do this job, MDF?, ASA?, fiberglass? And for those 2 subs, what inbox space is needed? Thanks! Keasbey
most commonly used is 3/4" mdf. fiberglass can be used as well......i think like 1/4" fiberglass=3/4" mdf...i heard that somewhere. usually fiberglass is used to get as much air space as possible and for custom boxes.
You need to get your subs first.... The Thiele/Small specs on the subwoofers dictate the net volume for optimum subwoofer response. Most MFR's tell you what the ideal "net" volume is for sealed and for ported (these will be 2 different sizes). When you design the box you have to design it "bigger" than the "net" because you need to include the volume displaced by the subwoofer itself (generally noted as Vd in the T/S parameters). The "exactness" of the volume is much more important in a ported application than it is in a sealed application. There is a program out there called WinISD which helps you design enclosures...but I'd just go by what the MFR suggests - unless you have something specific in mind (like BURP competitions or something).
I have gotten away with using 1/2" MDF for two tens if you brace it well. I also divided it into two smaller boxes to make it more rigid. The main things to consider are that it is the right size for your speaker and that it is sealed. One other thing is that if you have rear firing woofers ina mustang they sound so much better.
