I am about to buy a rebuild kit for my 2000 gt I have found a site that sells the kit for $900 called performance-auto-parts but I just wanted any input or opinions on what the best bet is for this... Thanks!
if you're rebuilding the engine, I recommend a forged crank, forged rods, and forged pistons...this way you have a strong motor, ready for boost in the future if you so desire.
well I do consider myself a car guy but I've never actually gone through an engine overhaul myself... tell me if I'm leaving anything off: Pistons rods rod and main bearings piston rings crank timing kit head bolts & gaskets Cam Bearings Oil Pump Lifters on that list what all would be reasonable to upgrade?
4.6s dont have cam bearings and we dont really have lifters we have rocker arm/cam followers and you dont need to upgrade those. get a good quality set of forged pistons and rods the pistons will come with rings and unless you intend to makes outragious HP you dont need a crank as your stock cast iron one will hold up to about 600hp unless you get a really good deal on a forged steel one. A timing set isnt needed unless your stang has a butt load of miles on it. I would get a melling oil pump they are the best because the gears are forged as apposed to the hardend ones that fail like the ones that mmr sells.
I got a cobra oil pump and pickup for my rebuild , the cobra pumps gears are wider than the GT ones .....and pickup has a larger hole to pull more oil thru ......
awesome, thanks guys your help is very much appreciated. This is one of those projects where I'll feel like an expert when it's done but right now I'm doin alot of reading and gathering of info.
How did it turn out? I am in the same boat now. Reading and never have rebuilt an engine before. Did you have the block machined or basically swap in the new stuff. Would appreciate as much input, tips/tricks as possible.
