Well tonight I was finishing up my explorer intake along with a big shot plate kit in between the upper and lower and I was tightenin down the fuel rail when it all of the sudden popped and I ended up breaking the whole damn thing off. Will my rail still stay down sufficiently with only one bolt?? [/
hmmmm it might stay, i would get it fixed, those bolts keep the rail still and prevent them from moving, with one bolt its likely to jump of the injectors, its unlikely but the chances are greater now lol just have some tig weld it all together and redrill and tap threads.
I cross threaded it, it didn't feel cross threaded though and I was just tightening snug and it popped...
damn, that sucks. i did something similar on a cadillac throttle body... just jb-weld it back on and hope it holds
That has to be tight or you'll start leaking gas ma homey... I'd throw some sonic weld putty on that bad boy and forget about it.
find someone to tig weld it for sure....then drill and tap some new threads. I have done that to a few timming covers for a guy that collects older buicks
that crappy cast aluminum is VERY difficult to TIG weld, so make sure you find someone good enough to do it, re-tap it. Dont rig it up with frikin JB weld.
ah yes...you need to ensure the rail is locked down, we 'though' I had blown a fuel line after my engine install...fuel EVERYWHERE..in the end we discovered it was just the line pushing up and off the injector because 'someone' (names removed) forgot to bolt the rail down. Make sure she's secure...trust me.
Oh yeah- Just thought of something. Rebuild those injectors since you're there. I got my kits from Advance for like $1 or $2 a piece at advance. Comes with O ring and cap for each injector. And don't accidently put 2 o rings one injector by forgetting one of the orings never came out of the rail... That makes for a gasy situation trust me
Have it welded, if you can, find somewhere that refinishes boat props to weld it for you. Those guys are some of the best at welding on aluminum I have ever seen. You won't be able to tell it was ever broke.
Second that. I did the same thing as you did but I broke the bolt off in the intake. I didn't think it would be a big deal but when I started the car it lifted the fuel rail off the injectors on that corner and shot fuel ALL OVER the place. For a temporary fix I used a large zip tie to the metal heater tube until I pulled the intake to swap cams and then fixed the broken bolt with a helicoil.
nah its not too bad, the only reason it would hard to weld is the metal is saturated with oil and water/coolant. clean the crap out of it and it wont be much of a problem. plus where that bolt is it wont be real bad, just a wire wheel to clean it up some before welding. ive welded on some intakes and they weld pretty good assuming you take some time and clean it up. it wont be a perfect shiny weld, there will always be some junk trapped in the porous texture of the cast metal. but for welding up holes and stuff its all good.
