Custom Axle Backs

I am think about making my own axle back system for my 2005 GT, does anyone have any input like if it would be a good i dea or not. I am also wondering if anyone knows if 4 1/2 inch tips will fit it in the rear bumper without touching it. I was wondering this since I don't want to burn the bumper or anything like that.
Any input would be great.

i think 4.5" would be too large. you need some clearance around the tips to prevent damage to the bumper itself. personally, unless you are trying inexpensive mufflers like Thrush or something, the work involved makes it not worth the effort, IMO. the problem with the inexpensive mufflers is that they wont flow as well or give you a great sound like the more expensive options. axlebacks can be purchased for under $300 shipped and you know they will fit and can check sound clips before you buy. cant say the same for a homemade kit.
