Cutting down valve tips

    Should cutting the tips on stainless valves be done?

    I ask because I bought some Racer Walsh valves which are 1/8" longer than stock and with everything on the head installed they are not closing completely during the compression cycle.

    Or maybe I'm stuck ordering some shorter valves.

    Oh, and this is on a '76 oval port head (no rollers)

    cutting them down shouldn't hurt a thing as far as I know...

    you cann not cut them more than about .060 the tips are harded (and most likley a wafer tip) cut them too far and and thip wafer tip will pop off or if not wafer tip you will just beat the tip of the valve into a mushroom shape.

    the machinist who set your head up should of let the valve heads High in the combustion chamber to "use " up some of that extra length..

    But also now would be the time to go to a small base circle roller cam, those need .100 long vaves to get the lash correct

    Why'd you buy the longer valves if you didn't need em :scratch:

    RedLX, I bought the valves because from my understanding I needed the extra length for the larger cam I bought (280 duration, .460" lift) in order to put the tip of the valve in the proper area on the follower for it's range of motion.

    Bogus SVO, Ya I goofed. I just told the machinest what I wanted him to do. He didn't know my whole setup. It probably would have been wiser to talk to someone before I went ahead and purchased the valves.

    Anyway I'm thinking it would probably be smarter to just buy new valves rather than have them possibly mushroom on me. Maybe I'll just save these if I build another one someday.
