I'm not sure what the kit includes in the way of directions. I had mine shipped to the shop that's doing the install for me. Here's a Stangnet article on it though: http://www.stangnet.com/pbullitt/tremect56/index.html One important piece of info D&D didn't mention over the phone: The viper spec T56 requires a 26 spline clutch as opposed to the 10 spline stock Cobra clutch. Fortunately the company I ordered my 10 spline clutch from last week is way slow and still hadn't shipped it 5 days after I placed the order.
Thanks, Sanchez. So, am I to assume that if I go with the Cobra T56 that I can use a 10 spline clutch? What clutch did you end up going with once you found out you needed a 26 spline clutch?
Yep, the Cobra T56 is 10 spline just like the T45. I went with a dual kevlar unit from Apex Motorsports. It's total overkill for my current setup, but I figure a few extra dollars at this stage will save me money in the long run when I step up to a power adder.
Great information, Sanchez. Sorry for all these noob questions. I am just starting to learn all this. On to my (hopefully) final newbie question for the day. What is the difference in clutches based on? Is it based on the engine output or the transmission hookup. i.e. I have a 97 Cobra that will have a T56 Cobra transmission installed... Do I then purchase a clutch that is stated as working with a 01-04 Cobra or a 97 Cobra? Thanks again and forgive my ignorance.
Haha, don't sweat it. I didn't know any of this either until I started researching my swap. The 96-04 Cobras should all have the same clutch dimensions. 11", 10 spline. You could just reuse your current clutch if you wanted to, but unless it's brand new or something, it makes good sense to replace it while everything's apart anyway.
That being said, I wonder why Partshopper has two different versions of the SPEC clutches, one for a 96-98 (SPEC-SF483) Cobra and one for a 99-03 (SPEC-SF873) Cobra. I'm now unsure which clutch to get for a '97 Cobra with the T56 Cobra transmission...
Oops, I was mistaken. 96-98 Cobras have a 10.5" disc rather than the 11" on the 99+. I'm not sure what you need for your combo. Give D&D a call, and they can give you the correct answer. (248) 735-6220
I'm also making a list of things to replace while the tranny is out. Don't want to miss something while the labor cost is already being paid. Your car is obviously newer but are you replacing other things such as U-Joints, etc?
New u-joints are included with the driveshaft D & D provides with their kit. Other than that, I'm replacing the clutch, flywheel, rear end gears (stepping up to 4.56), differential bushings, half-shafts (stepping up to 31 spline 03's), and adding an IRS brace. The bushings, half-shafts, and IRS brace don't apply to your car, of course, but there might be other suspension components you'd want to upgrade.
