Ok, so when I first start my car in the mornings, cold or hot weather, I have 2 things happen. First until my car has been running for about 10 minutes I get this lifter tapping sound. I thought I may have to pull the valve cover and set the spaces on my lifters but why would this only happen when the engine is just started? I had to do this with my Toyota pickup 4 banger years ago, not sure if they have the same kind of rocker/lifter setup. Second, when I first start it up I get a not so smooth idle. Most of the time its not too bad, it may die every now and then but most of the time it will have a normal idle then drop about 500 rpms then go back up and so forth until the engine gets warm. Any suggestions?
To get rid of the tapping, you'll have to replace the lash adjusters (lifters). Not a hard job, but get a proper valve spring compressor....a box end wrench just doesn't do it very well. The idle I can't help ya with, mine does the same thing. I'm guessing IAC....? Ash
Idle could very well be TPS. Mine has that same ticking when it is first started, but only at higher RPM's. I figured it was just that the oil hadn't fully circulated throughout the motor yet and it was making a little bit of noise. I may very well be wrong though.
