I had that same problem with 3rd gear on my old cobra. It was bad syncros.

The T-3650 tranny in the Cobra's, GT's, and Mach-1's are known for bad synchros and bent shift forks. Check out the 4.6 section on this board and look at the sticky at the top. It is bad enough, that the members are trying to force Ford into making a recall to fix the tranny's

    I thought the 99 to 2001 cobra's has t-45 trannys?

But, yes sounds like a bad syncro... I had the same problem in my old 86 GT I had... I could make a normal shift into 3rd.. but, if I quick shift it, it would grind... a replaced syncro fixed my problem.

The 99 snakes were equipped w/ a T-45 while the '01 snakes (and Bullitts too) were equipped w/ a TR-3650.

I have the same prob with my 01. I do alot of 1,3,5 shifting for better gas mileage and its even worse when I do that. Started after a hard grind into 3rd at the track a couple of weeks ago. :damnit:

I have some of that when I go to 2nd gear but during normal shifing more then anything...seems like when it does it and I get pissed and slam it into 2nd the next time around it does not do it?

Just the trannys, the pro 5.0 helped with some of it and I also noticed if I pause and go slow after I fell a "bump" I can easily pull it into 2nd. Its become nearly a habit now.

My 99 Cobra was like that and I also had trouble getting into reverse. I put in a can of limited slip differential modifier about a month ago. No reverse problems & much smoother shifts 1-2 & 2-3!
