Hey guys, this thread is for anyone who doesnt get gt40p heads specifically for the reason of not wanting to get new headers. Having owned the frpp P headers on the gt40p heads let me start buy saying it is ALOT easier just to get the P headers if you can throw out the extra cash. But if you cant it is pretty simple to make your stock headers work. All it took was about 5 minutes with a ball-peen hammer. Now also let me say dont plan on being able to change your spark plugs with the headers on. Ok, so there are only 2 spark plugs that give you trouble with headers other than the p headers. You just have to massage those two pipes and you should be good. I know in my pics my headers are backwards because I am getting ready to start my turbo project, but the p heads are not side specific so it will work the same the headers would just be backwards. I have tried them with the headers on normal and they work just as well. I am using a 90* boot to test these, I am not sure if they work with a 45* boot. And also I would get some boot protectors just in case. Side 1: Here is what I hammered in. This is the closest one, I havent touched this pipe but I may hammer it down a little just in case before I use them, but it does clear non the less. Side 2:
Yea they do look a little restrictive. Here is a pic for comparison. You can still clearly see through the pipe, its not as crimped as it looks, but it does look a little restrictive.
budget mod.....are you suppose to silicone the head bolts?? your arp bolts seem to have silicone on them........
Those look functional enough for a quick fix or temporary solution due to lack of funds, but I would not run those for long. Aside from looking terrible (sorry), they look like they bottleneck the exhaust flow in multiple spots. Exhaust restrictions like those can cause unnecessarily high backpressure which could cause loss of power, overheating, and a lack of efficiency seen as a drop in fuel economy. Why not just use the classic BBK shorties flipped around for your DIY turbo kit??
Because of cost. What do you mean in multiple spots? I only hammered in that one primary, the rest of the spots are just how restrictive the stock headers are. I still havent decided what I am going to do for my turbo build, I my just find another set of stock headers an flip them upside down because they completely clear all plugs that way. On the driver side (would actually be passenger side if used normally) you dont need to remove the headers to take out the spark plugs, you dont even need to touch that header to use them on p heads.
I guess I've forgotten how ****ty the stock shorties are from the factory. The look like someone held them by the primaries and smashed them together like cymbals, then threw them under a speeding tractor trailer...
i ran stock headers on a bunch of my **** with gt40ps, yeah they work, but yeah they suck something horrible.. just save up and get some summit cheapies, they work great!!
besides the fact that no one likes factory headers, thanks for showing people that it CAN be done. if i was going turbo, i sure wouldnt be using those headers.
Yea well as for now I cant afford new headers but later on when I can I will just cut these off and put some p headers in there.
Don't worry about it with a turbo, it's not a issue like you would think with a N/A car. My first turbo kit was built using stock headers and switching from it to the Hellion kit netted me no difference in horsepower or spool up time. Some guys on Turbomustangs are deep in the 6's(1/8 mile) with stock headers. Use what you got and it'll be fine. Good luck on the build.
regular BBK shorties work fine with 90 degree boots (#7 plug is a lil tricky to change tho) not sure how they would work flipped around like that
