guys with 4.10s get in here

"Well at that point, I had definitely gone too far with the 4.10 gears. They were perfect for a stock 5 speed. But with the added go of the H/C/I kit, 4.10's were just ridiculous. I went back down a notch to 3.73."

Exactly. Without slicks or major susp mods, you spin in first if you do h/c/i. WHY? More low end TQ than stock ;) I bet Grady has more Low end now than he had stock for example. So..the result is you spin more. This is why I say street 3.73 is perfect 5 spd.

Grn with 4.30's, how far do you drive everyday? Do you have slicks? TALL tire? What's the catch? Dam 7000RPM must jerk your head off. What is your powerband and do you have any low end on that? I mean at 2500 rpm what's it got? Thanks.:)

Its isn't a daily driver, but can be if needed. I much prefer the German luxury Audi to drive daily :D I do not have slicks, just old nitto 555r's 25.5" tall. I don't race so I never put slicks on it. My tires are old so when I replace them i'll just use MT drag radials. The powerband is about 3,200-6,800. Low end is fine. I don't know what kinda dyno numbers is makes down there, I never dynoed it. I told Ed C when he was doing the cam that I did not care about low end, mid-high end power was all I cared about.

Its tuned on the street myself via a anderson PMS and an innovate wideband. I'm more into just cruising it. I don't beat on it when I take it out. Part of the reason is my 30lb injectors are 100% maxed out, I see 94% duty cycle around 6,500 rpm. It needs 42's ideally.

My cousin has an immaculate 70 torino. He had 4.30's in it and it was unbelievably fast. He had a 3 speed unfortunately and had to tone it down to 4.10's if he didnt want to trailer it to events.

Somehow or the other :bang:

I've never been able to successfully explain my point about steep gears
and how they can act S O differently in a ........
#1 Stock Stang
and
#2 A Stang that has had its power band shifted up and extended.

NOWHERE or NEVER in any of my attempts to explain the benefit a steep
ratio for example #2 did I speak of traction

Yes ... I now got WAY more low end torque than I've ever had in the past  :nice:

Yes ... You're gonna spin the tires in 1st gear in A N Y Stang :D

That is a given :Word:

I don't give a rats azz about 1st gear with my little street driven GT :nono:
Traction Speaking ... that is

Heck Fire ... If I go to the floor too fast in 2nd gear from a roll on .......
I loose it about 50% of the time

I don't care about that as well :nono:

To my way of thinking ... it is simply a sign that I'm makin some power :rlaugh:

Now ... for those who say 1st gear is too short

They make it sound like I can only travel like ... 5 feet :rlaugh:

Many people have driven my GT and N O N E of them have said
they found my 1st gear unacceptable ... AND I Might Add ... I've
asked them about it

But ... Yes ... It is shorter than when I was runnin my 308's

anyway

When I hook good in second or if I wanna wind out 2nd or 3rd
or
When I just wanna play around at only 50% throttle ;)

That is when I really enjoy a steep ratio

I don't deny it :nono:

At any given highway speed, all Stangs are gonna turn the rpm as calculated by gear set and tire size

Its the fact your mid range is stronger and your top end range is stronger as
well as higher ... T H A T ... is the difference ... I have tried to explain is so
different between a Stock or close to Stock Stang and a more stoutly modded
Stang like in #2 above.

A different way of putting down what I'm trying to say would be like this :)

A little stocker Stang starts to run outta breath before 5K :notnice:
and
A good breathing Stang is ramping up at mid range
so
Where the Stocker is starting to peter out (4800 rpm)
then
The h/c/i Stang is going Strong (4800 rpm) and has a lot more to go :nice:

Thus

The steeper 373 or 410 ratio doesn't seem to be as steep

In my case ... A mild h/c/i aftermarket OEM block combo .......
I pull the lever at 6200
so
I can wind out to 6200 - 4800 or 1400 more rpm than the stocker

I guess it should be said ... I choose a cam and intake with that in mind ;)

But ... Yes ... at 70 or 80 mph ... it is gonna be turnin more rpm's
than if you had 327 or 355's

I done now :D
and
I'm sure everybody is tired of my ramblin about steep gearsets

One more thing :)

I'm not calling Keith out here or saying he is wrong with his info :nono:

I know for certain his info is based upon using different ratios as well :nice:
thus
He is a man with an ... experience ... rather than ... just an opinion :Word:

I just felt it needed to be pointed out all modded Stangs are not apples

Some are apples ... Some are oranges ... Some are

Grady

Well put.

I feel exactly the same way... if I had known when I did gears that I would be selling my car when I did, I would have probably put in 3.73s, and here's why...

with my mods and the cam retarded, I was shifting around 5500. I think the 4.10s were too much, I was crossing the line at basically 5900, which is probably floating the valve springs. 3.73s would have MOST LIKELY been just right.

If I had the extra 700 RPMS you did, I bet 4.10s would have been perfect.

So when are you getting 4.10s?:D
