How much power can a stock motor take before it starts getting "upset" and parts of the engine start coming out through the block.... base it on a 96 (non-pi) gt block with hyper-pathetic pistons and stock rods... with say a paxton pushing 9psi through it already.... EDGE
On 99+ depending on who you ask the danger zone starts around 400-425rwhp so Id guess around there or lower for the pre 99s (guessing folks). Course if you break it you can build it better.
I want to say no but dont remember for sure. Big difference was the heads on em. Rings, Rods and bearings are the things I usually hear of failing at the over 400 levels.
Yes from the standpoint that they're built the same way, from the same crappy design and material, but the '99's have a larger dish to them to compensate for the added compression of the later head design. As far as horsepower......400-425rwhp is a pretty good baseline, but you can kill an engine at less than 300rwhp if you continuously over-rev it, or your tune or fuel system isn't up to snuff. I'm a firm believer in beefing up the bottom end before making any serious power modifications, but some thus far have had luck with their stock engines. I'd just prefer to spend the extra $1,200.00 up front to take that out of the equation. One less thing to worry about.
i know the heads and intake are different yeah, i wasnt aware that the newer pistons were dished... I want to add a shot of gas on top of the blower to make a bit more power, only for the track, not for the street.. i dynoed at under 270 rwhp so i'd think the block still had more to give ? any experiences ? i wish it was only $1200 dude, looking at getting the kits sent over here is gonna cost a fortune, so much so that i might as well have the whole 302 stroker forged and a set of heads and cams..... but i'd like to gas it first and see how it does EDGE
It would likely be safer and a whole lot cheaper if you were to just cool the charge with a water/methanol injection kit like the SNOW set up. http://www.snowperformance.net/products.asp?id=1
this is very true dude...... i'll have a look in to this first... has anyone got one of these..... i was thinking of using the nitrous to cool and boost but this might be more insurance / police friendly.. EDGE
will this improve power just by bolting it on or does it need a tune to advance the ignition to see any extra power ? EDGE
Well….you should have your system retuned, to optimize safety and performance (especially if you’re worried about your engine internals) but your current set up should allow some leeway, as some people have installed them without a retune with success. What it does is lower your ACT temperatures by cooling the intake charge after it's compression. A cooler charge not only packs more oxygen molecules, but doing so will as a result able the computer to pull less timing to increases power levels. I can’t say for sure the particulars on the kit, as I have never personally run one. I’ve just got a big old heat exchanger up front, used in conjunction with a home built after cooler reservoir in the truck that circulates water (and for the track, Ice Water ) throughout the system. To tell you the truth.....I wouldn't be to anxious to push things too hard with your current 30lb/hr injectors. They're probably nearing 90-95% cycle duty as it is. You may want to replace them with a set of 36-42 lb squirters and have it retuned, to bring it back down to safer levels. The last thing you want to do, is run out of fuel at 6000RPM.
running out of fuel sure would suck.... i never thought of the injectors, i thought 30lbs would be ok to 350 hp ish... I just spoke to Snow, the kit seems real good... although, it reduces temps so you can run more boost or timing, definately needs a tune then.... might get one just in case....... EDGE
If it was only $1200, I think everyone wouldnt have a problem doing it first, but not everyone knows how to put a sb together. $1200 usually covers the labor charges for the swap, but if you know how to do everything, then $1200 should get you some decent internals. In terms of people having luck with the stock engines, it has more to do with the tune/tuner than luck. MPH has many many many many cars out there using their stock sb, and not a one has blown due to the tune. Pretty good reputation imo, and that was good enough for me to go there for the blower.
Keep in mind though....off all the blown engines they've got out there. I'll bet my left nut that 95% of them have put on less than 30K since the install and I'll wager than 90% of that number has less than 10-15K on the engine since the install. You may be right, that most will hold out at those power levels, but only time will really tell on that one. I just choose to error on the side of caution.
i've been kinda talked in to geting an SCT pro racer package so i can map the car... any idea where sells these things ?? EDGE
