I installed my Hurst shifter into my 06 GT, Love the way it shifts. Before I installed it, I lubed the shifter arm bushing using some assembly lube. I also lubed to plastic shift rod sleeves with lithium grease. I decided to lube the metal factory bushing sleeve as well with assembly lube. The more i drive it the better it gets.
Cool...i was thinking about getting one though I don't know if I should get a hurst or another brand.
Depends on what you want it to feel like. Do you want the notchy feel of the Hurst? .. or do you want it to be smooth, positive, and just short throw? If you don't want the notchy feel of it, get the MGW.
I love my hurst, a retro shifter for a retro car and it looks awesome. I have the part# for the new hurst billet shifter if anyone is interested, it's part #3915201. It looks much stronger than the original. I'm going to buy it even though there's nothing wrong with my current hurst, the billet just looks stronger for the long haul.
I'm loyal to a product thats allways been to good to me as hurst has over the years. Mustangs and hurst just naturally go together, even more so with the retro thing going. Nothing looks sweeter than to pull up behind a stang and see the hurst equiped emblem on the truck lid. If I couldn't run a hurst, I would leave it stock, it may sound stupid, but thats the way I roll.
holy buckets! yardspecial posted! i thought the 08 was your car? err, maybe it was an 07. been so long since you have posted, i forgot.
Gosh the Hurst looks great, and I had one in my F150, but I tried some guys Saleen and it felt a bit too notchy. I drive my stang almost daily, so I think the MGW will be in mine Except, it doesn't come close to looks. I might have to customize the two somehow.
Had one on my 06 Pony Package and also have one on my 07 GT that I traded the 4.0 in on. Love it... but be sure to use locktight on the bolt threads holding the chrome handle on...they always work loose! Replaced the painted ball that comes with it with the solid smooth classic ball. Feels a lot better than having the "Hurst" dig into your hand and if you hit it, no paint to flake off. Also.... The stock ball paint is from China... note the slightly reddish primer at the threads before you put the ball on... Could contain lead. The solid resin ball has no paint.
I think I am one of the only ones who runs a pro5.0 shifter. Hasnt done me wrong yet! Love the notch!
Really? I just installed the Hurst and only have a few miles on it but don't know if I like it. I expected notchy and somewhat noisy shifts (I had a Hurst in a 65 fastback I used to own and that's what I remember from it). I also expected precision though, and I don't know if I got that with the Hurst package. The 2-3 shifts seem the same or worse than the factory shifter. Sometimes it shifts great...just not always and I was hoping that ALL shifts were positive. Also, I had an issue with the stock metal insert on the front hangar bushing which had nothing to do with the Hurst...I tried to pry the insert from the stock rubber bushing and a piece broke off of the lip (seemed like it was made of really cheap pot metal). Functionally I don't think it's a huge deal since that piece doesn't really move anyway...but being the perfectionist I am it's driving me nuts having it in there that way. If anyone has an old one they'd like to sell (like you guys that upgraded to MGW shifters) and/or the Ford part number (if you can even buy that part without purchasing the entire shifter assembly) please post or PM me!! I'm going to give the Hurst a little bit of time in hopes that it will break in...and I really love the look and feel of the ball and stick (very nostalgic for me due to the one I had on my '65)...but if it doesn't get a little bit smoother or more positive it might go bye-bye in favor of the stock shifter and/or MGW.
Forgot to comment on this...is the ball really painted? It seems like it's molded solid white to me...if painted what color is it underneath??
Are you sure you installed it right? The Hurst instructions tell you to install it backwards. They updated them, but some people are still getting the wrong directions in the package. If the linkage loop is installed backwards, it will cause shifts to be harder. When you installed the shifter, which side were the grooves on for the handle? If they were on the right, then it's installed right. If they were on the left, it's backwards.
Yeah, the grooves are on the right (passenger side). Funny thing is I bought it from Brenspeed and they (or Hurst??) circled the part in the instructions that told you to put the long part on the drivers side but also circled the other section (section 6 I think) that contradicted that and told you to put it on the passenger side...in other words it made it even more confusing since the instructions aren't even consistent!! Thanks for the info though...and the shifts seem like they might be getting a little bit smoother with use... My biggest gripe now is that it's really difficult to shift into reverse after the car has been parked (is cold) although that was a minor problem with the stock shifter as well...the Hurst has just magnified the problem. The 2-3 shift is also a difficult one, but again it wasn't perfectly smooth before the Hurst install either.
