I have been debating selling my Cobra and would prefer not removing all the mods I have installed because the car is tuned and runs like a top as is. I realize I will never recoup the $$ put into the car but cant stand thinking about returning the car to stock or near stock, however I am not sure if someone looking for a used Cobra would be more inclined to buy it with the mods or without. So my general question is, if you were looking to buy a used Cobra, would a Cobra with a lot of mods appeal to you?
When looking for my 03' I knew I wanted something that hadnt been molested. I was afraid if someone had upgraded the car to run 10s in the 1/4 they would put more ware and tare on the car than I wanted to deal with. Knowing what I had to start out with made all the difference in my mind.
You'll probably find that this is a black/white situation with very little grey. There is probably some that would rather find a car that is bone stock because it represents a car that has been untouched. Others will appreciate the mods as being that much less they have to do. I myself would probably tend to shy away from a modded car, choosing rather to mod it if I wish rather than accept it that way. I have been bitten by the modding bug before but have resisted doing that with my current Cobra and I feel for sure that there are quite a few people out there that could appreciate a virgin Mustang Cobra with all the OEM equipment with low mileage. Personally, I can relate because at some point I'd love to be able to find a completely stock, low mileage 93 Cobra at some point when I can afford it. To me, that would be worth more than a modded Cobra.
Hehe, I agree with all three of you. I personally only buy cars that are factory also since you never know what the car has been through unless you personally know the history of the vehicle or owner. I just figured there may be others that would prefer some extra goodies at little or no extra cost verses spending the money out of pocket. I have no push to sell it, I just dont drive it enough, only 1-2k per year and it seems like a waste sitting there the rest of the time. delema's delema's !
I'm selling mine and have been debating the same question. As I know it's scary to buy a modded car, I still have not put mine back to stock. It has a few mods. The main one that I think would scare people is the 4 point cage. Ironically, my car has never been to the drag strip. It has however been in two state approved hwy runs. It's mint and would give someone who wants to mod a sweet start for free. Although I do also feel I could make a little more money selling the mods and the stock car, I really don't want to take them off. The car runs like a stock car, if driven normal. I hate to put it back to stock, but I'm thinking it may be best :dunno:
I only buy stock or VERY lightly modded cars. My 01 Cobra had springs, shifter and K&N filter. Rest stock down to the orginal tires. I also keep all the old parts just in case I have to sell the car. ( I never sell) Keep them for life, make great flower pots !!!
I would love to buy modded but you wonder how well the person did it and how hard they beat on the car. but in the long run it saves the buyer time and money cause it already has mods. I've discovered that looks modded sells better than performance.
I always thought that if you were going to sell to a private party, a modded snake would be more appealing, where if you were trading in to a dealership put it back to stock. Dealerships will not give you anymore for a modded car. Take off the parts and sell them.

It was just a matter of time before Nazman found this thread!! If I sell it probably wont be right away. I take a long time to make decisions. I just have an itch for something else and the stable is full! Some things I am considering are; new Shelby Mustang, used Viper, 65' Cobra replica......you see where I am going with this? Maybe I just need a bigger stable
Given a choice, I'd buy the stock vehicle, but mods wouldn't prevent me from buying a car (depending on the quality of the work).

However, I have been in the same predicament you are in and understand the situation. All the other vehicles you are contemplating would be fun to own and mod....Anyone that knows you or visits your website would keep most of the mods!
Yes, I was looking at an 03 GT with mods, I almost got it, but the transmission was bad, so my wife said "Why aren't you looking at Cobras?" so that's what I did and found one Anyway, the mods on the GT were a big helper for me, that was time and money put into that car that I don't have. It would have taken me years to get my GT up to that due to work, school and kids. Just my opinion
I voted YES. I had the choice between a 1996 Black Cobra (Stock) or a 1996 Red Cobra (supercharged). Well as you can see I chose the supercharged one. I find that you take a chance with any used car. Whether the black one was heavily modded, then stripped and sold for stock or was completly stock, I dont think I would know that. Nobody knows what a car has been threw or not. I say look at the quality, talk to the seller probing him for how intelligent he is in mechanics, do a carfax report, and drive the car! All in all you should use these steps when buying any used car! BTW the cobra was roughly 2.5k more than the stock, and I payed it because the level of work and care the car has gone threw was worth it to me. I understand how much money it takes to make a car fast and keep it there! just my .02c!
I think it depends on the mods. If the mods are from well know companies (e.g., Vortech, FRPP, Steeda,Borla, etc.) you might get more money. If they are crap companies (MAC, Altezza, etc.), then it will decrease.
Bolt-on cars yes, I'd buy one with light bolt-ons like midpipe, catback, pulleys, CAI, and maybe even long tubes since they are a PITA to install and that's one less thing to have to worry about installing...suspension stuff is also ok because suspension is usually a pain to install also... I'd never buy a car that I knew had nitrous ran though it before or one that has or had an aftermarket supercharger on it...
