How common is it for the TOB to wear a groove in the input shaft? This would be on a toploader 3 speed. When I push the pedal, it often catches at the very top then clicks down, and its very audible through the linkage. You can feel the pedal like its stuck, then it just clicks and passes the point and goes smoothly.

Is this common? I thought the input shaft was steel....

Of other note, the TOB is shot. I am putting a new one in tomorrow, I just want to know if its something that is common, and if it is a groove can I sand it down.

    Thanks!

The throw out bearing does not come in contact with the input shaft, it rides on the front bearing retainer. That retainer should be polished with fine sandpaper and lightly coated with grease before reassembling.

Yes that is the front bearing retainer. Polish it up and coat it lightly with grease. I can't tell from the photo, is that where you said there is a groove?
