I've had my car since '87 and driven it all of about 2000 miles. It's further apart than its ever been (rolling, but about as disassembled as you can get, yet still be weatherproof) and I'm not sure when I'll ever get the cash to do it right (3 kids 12 thru 3). I've got a chance to trade it straight across for a '67 coupe that's in primer (couple different colors) but looks to have had been done right. The car has no motor or tranny, other than that I haven't looked at it closely enough. This guy got it from another guy that bought it and pulled the motor and tranny. I've got a 302 with '69 351w heads on the stand ready to be put into something. I've got a Liberty modified top loader, Lakewood, race disc, pressure plate, T/O bearing, fork, just need a Z-bar and a set of pedals if this car is an auto car. My best bud has the z-bar and pedals out of a '65 that he'll give to me, I'm not sure if they'll work or not. The guy that has the car now is setting up his own restoration, restomodding shop just around the corner from me, I also have a '76 F-250 I want to see if he'll take and maybe put the '67 coupe into some DP90 for me so it's all one color. I've also got a '57 9" I can put into the '67. The thing is, I could have the '67 going a lot sooner than my '65 and I like the '67 body style better anyway. If I do do this, I'd like to eventually put an FE in it anyway and the FE won't fit in the '65 without a lot of work. Except for 1 year of the 17 I've had it, my '65 has been garage kept, so the only rust problems are from before I had it. I'm hoping to get in good with the guy and maybe make a little extra cash working for him on the side, plus I'd have the ability to work on my own stuff in his shop, so I'd have access to a soda blaster, down draft paint booth, etc. I think money wise, the trade might not be so great, but time wise, its better for me. As long as the condition of the car is better than mine is if I assembled it back together, I think I'll do it. I already know what to look for as I've been into these cars for 20 years. I guess the "what do you think" question is sorta rhetorical. I'm going to do it if my heart feels right. Ultimately I think it'd be best in the long run, especially if he'll let me work for him on the side helping him out. I'll learn some more, have access to equipment I don't have to own or maintain (unless I'm maintaining it for him), and I don't have to pay insurance on the shop.
I'm thinking from a practicality standpoint, yes it would. Even if it were a '68-'70. I'm trying not to get emotionally caught up in it and look at it objectively as possible. I'm just getting tired of looking at the '65 (or what you can see of it as its buried under stuff) and not being able to do anything with it.
Welcome to the 67 coupe crowd, I think it's a great body style. My 67 coupe has a 302 and the PO had a 65 rod from the pedal to the Z-bar, it fit but has a different angle, therefore it was binding and not fitting right. I installed the right rod and everything fits better. I did have to use a universal threaded rod at the bottom of the Z-bar to the lever through the bell housing to get the right length. Good luck, I know what it's like to have kids and pursue a hobby. I had to put mine off till my son was almost out of college.
My first Mustang was a '67 vert. 289, T-10, power top. Totaled before I could finish her, that was in '86. I haven't gone to look at the car yet, she looks a little rougher from the driver's front corner angle than I had hoped.
A 65 A-code coupe is worth more than a generic 67 coupe if in similar condition so make sure you don't get screwed. This guy wants the 65 A-code because restored it will bring more money than the 67 he already has.
Hey Larry.............DO IT.......67's rule....... O/T....Have you heard about someone getting killed at one of the tracks there this last weekend?? Someone at work here heard that. Bud
Ron, yeah, I know. But I hadn't intended on restoring it, and I was hoping to get the '67 in a little further along shape than my car currently is. My car probably deserves to be restored instead of restomodding, what with the way the prices have been going up lately. Bud, no I dodn't hear anything about that, let me research it a bit. Did you goto the Arlington Swap meet or FFW Ennis?
No I didnt get too. Had to work on Sat and we ran the TMCCC race at Kennadale yesterday. To many things not enough time....Sounds normal dont it....
