posted on turboford.org also but I'm looking for as much coverage on this as possible before I dive into it head first tomorrow ok guys, I finally got a chance to get into charleston to take a look at the t-bird my dad got in a while back. Looks pretty good and the drivetrain will look even better in the little mustang body I've been hoarding away in a corner... here they are (not much to look at right now I know): Ok, even though the mustang is stick shift, I think it's missing 3rd gear but right now I just wanna get the swap done and get it running. They both have red interiors (ick) so I can use the t-bird front seats in the mustang (those things are COMFY!). QUESTIONS!!!!!! :dunno: :dunno: was cranking the t-bird at dusk tonight after ripping out the ignition and it would "want" to start as long as I held me foot down somewhat on the gas, as soon as I let off it would cut off...and I smelled a LOT of gas (think could be just flooding but didn't think fuelie cars did this!?!?). Um, if the turbo was locked up I wouldn't even have gotten this far with the cranking right?? I mean there was gassy smoke everywhere (dad cuts cats out) soooo I assume stuff is getting by the turbo? hopefully when I try in the morning it'll be ok to crank. um the t-bird is dated 10/85 so does that make it an 86??? I didn't see a "premium switch" ANYWHERE on the dash or console etc so I assume this model doesnt have that option? the 2.3T engine will bolt to the N/A 2.3 5speed and flywheel etc right?? is the rearend in this thing posi?? it'll go up under the mustang right?? same width?? what accessories should I get my serpentine belts from as I see this thing still has dual v-belts!! ahhhhhhhhhhhh (head explodes) sniffle I just hope I can get it to idle tomorrow and run right.
not sure if the turbo is locked up...seems to me that if you can get to to at least run with your foot on the pedel...then it shouldn't be locked up. your tranny will bolt up to it...shouldn't have any problems, the rear end i beleive is a 7.5" limited slip with 3.45 gearing and will bolt in to the mustang,if you wanted to keep the serp. belts....just switch over your pulleys from the stangs engine to the turbo motor. i'm not sure where on the car it is or even if your car has it...but the premium switch...i'm not for sure but i think it's either on your ecu or in the engine compartmant. hope this all helps...good luck
no intercooler makes it and 85 or 86i dont believe those models had the prem switch, and they also had the smaller VAM and smaller injectors. You may think about getting an 87-88 computer/vam/injector combo for better performance. Dr.
some 86's came with brown top injectors (clean off the top of one of the injectors, its either green (30lb) or brown (35lb)). Chances are there is not premium switch, so dont worry about that. Tranny, yes a bolt in...but suggested to get a new clutch. serpentine belt setup will easily swap over yes the rear end will switch over, but i dont see a need for it. when you try to crank it , if it has been sitting remember gas goes bad. Make sure everything is in time, check: crank at TDC Cam lined up with pointer rotor under neath your dizzy cap is pointing at #1 plug w/ the above in order Also its good to hook up a timing light so when its turning over you can tell if its getting spark(the light blinks) . Or do it hte old fashioned way, just dont get a new hair-do. if your getting spark, with it in time, you smell the gas, should start.
cool, thanks for the info, I've already pulled both engines today and am going to go through the turbo motor tonight so I can drop it in tomorrow. I did buy a new clutch. I got one for a turbocoupe (not for the normal 2.3 so that should hopefully do). also, a recent find warranting the rear end swap...when we had the car in the air...the rear end is locked up! doh! Though, I'm just going to toss the 8.8 locker I've got in another foxbody project gone bad since I remembered I had it please see me wiring thread as I've got lots of new questions I need help with before later tonight
