    I just purchased a '98 Cobra and i have a few questions.

First, i'm new to the modular engine (current car is '90 Mustang 5.0), any links/website that provide good information?

Second, the car didn't have the owner's manual and I thought it would be easy to get a new one. Well, it's not. I went to Helm's website and the manual is out of stock without any info on when it will be in stock. Anyone have other ideas on how i can get the owner's manual for the '98 Cobra?

Third, since i don't have the owner's manual I have no clue what type of oil it uses and the amount for an oil change?

    1) This website and svtperformance.com are decent starting points forCobra DOHC engine info.

    2) Dunno on the owners manual.

    3) I have a 97 Cobra with exactly the same engine as yours. Cobra's came from the factory with full-synthetic (Mobil-1?) 5w-30, and I use MObil-1 5w-30 and Ford original equipment fuel filters.

    4) Premium grade gas is required. I run 91 Octane most of the time and occasially run a tank of 94 through for giggles. I am at a moderately high altitude, and have fairly high summer temps (30-40 deg Celcius which I think is 80-100 F) and have no issues with pinging.

Correction: Ford original equipment *OIL* filters (altho I use original fuel filters as well).

That makes sense as the Cobras have a remote oil cooler in front of the rad IIRC. ~5 for engine and and extra for cooler capacity would make sense.

you do have to run atleast 91 octane, our computers are setup that way. I don't use mobile one, but the weights are the same. a chilton book for our cars cover most things. if not there just ask!!

They have an oil cooler but its all done with coolant at the oil filter adapter. The extra oil is needed for the DOHC cylinder heads.

From owners guide SVT supplement for '01

Trying to attach two pages of info from the '01 supplement. Hope it works and helps! I won't copy page 16 just to show you it recommends 91 octane since there are several replies indicating that already. The supplement is fairly small so if you want me to burn a copy of the entire thing, just get in touch and let me know where to send it.

calgarycobra stated the Cobra takes 5w-30. Looking at the 2001 Cobra supplement it recommends 5w-20.

    Do the 96-98 cobra's use 5w-30 and the 99+ use 5w-20?

I'll have to check my oil cap and/or manual to be sure. I thought it was 5w30, but it might be 5w20.

My bad...I thought we'd all run the same. My '01 book is worthless to you, I'm afraid.

The 97 manual calls for 6 quarts of 5w30 and I recommend Quaker State's new full synthetic oil. It also calls for 91 octane, no more, no less.
