I am going to go get a 1969 mercury cougar, and I need to put some wheels on it to get it home. Will the wheels off my 95 mustang fit it? thanks Zack
Yes/no. The lug-spacing will work; but you need to check the backspacing or get spacers. Classic Cougar = Classic Mustang = 4.7" backspace.
I have a 68 Cougar with 96 Cobra rims (17x8) and 245/45/17's, on it. I had to use 1" spacers/adapters front and rear to get the proper backspacing of 4.75". Looks pretty good but I think I'm going to swap to a different style rim.
Ok, I just need to get it home (dont care what it looks like) will it rub or any thing? just need it to move.
I'm not rubbing currently, but I plan on dropping the front end down andothe 1.5" so it might then. Still have to do the Arning (Shelb) drop and cut the springs.
Ok I'll go out on a limb here, you say nothing about the diameter so I'll assume 17" the 95 mustangs use 5.72" backspacing. The rears will fit, but the fronts will hit the ball joint on the upper control arm. They will not bolt on or roll this way, you will need a 1" spacer for the front.
I dont know if the signals work or not 16"s, I will have to look for 2 for the front then. btw, I am going to look at 2 more cougars this week. (so if I get them, I might can have 1 good car LOL)
if they are the 16x7's they "should" bolt up without a spacer, if they're 8's you're SOL. are these 2 other cougars you're going to look at also 69's? if so, i might be interested in buying some parts from you for my 69 cougar. let me know when you can. you can shoot me a pm about it as well. Dan, i may need to be talking to you about some seqential stuff for my car before too long.
+1 As soon as I get the Cleve running and the car moving. There's another thread on here about "spring fever" and getting the cars out of the barns. I don't have to worry about snow any more than you do, Bryan; for me it's been "all about Rodeo" and nothing more than the carb rebuild has happened on my '73. I've got to get all that stuff out of the Cougar's trunk and into/onto the Cleveland! Car's been sitting so long the tires are starting to get low on air Maybe today I"ll get online and order the cam Milo recommended (which I think was vitually the same one I had in the Grannie)..... It's certainly a good price (since it's an old grind) and maybe it'll get me motivated to get things going again!
It's (I believe) an old Crane "RV" grind; 484/510 @ 204*/214*. Not a lot of anything, but it'll "open up" the engine a little and still have enough vacuum for the brakes, A/C, etc. I'm not going to get any spectacular timeslips; but that's not the plan for this car - looking more for a "sporty cruiser". If/when I can stop spending money on other things; I'll look to a roller/stroker Cleveland, probably with EFI, and put it in a Mustang FB body. Presently the cam will work well with the OE 2V heads, Edlebrock Perf 2750 intake, 600 CFM Holley and dual exhaust with Maggies and the factory exh manifolds (FPA shorties later?). I just thought it would be a good way to "wake up" the engine a little without giving my wife a reason to not drive it. Summit-brand cam, probably made by Edlebrock (yeah, I know); but it should do what I want for now..... EDIT:Here's a Link To It; except that I'm going "cam only"; as I already have a brand-new set of Comp Cams lifters that have been soaking in 30-weight for the last 3 months! Jeeze, I gotta get off my duff and get back into this plan!
yeah that cam will do fine. plenty of lift but the duration is mild enough that it should idle almost like a stocker with just a little burble, no lope though. you should really think about a set of aussie heads for it too though, since you're doing all this other stuff. you should be able to pick up a set for less than a grand and they'll bump the compression up to a better level and also not be as prone to detonation as the standard 2v head, plus all your intake and exhaust will bolt right up. they'd be good for later "expansion" of the engine as well. also, believe it or not, the extra compression will help fuel economy quite a bit. on my last windsor in the stang i changed the pistons to a stock flat top (what it should have in the first place) from the inverted dome pistons i'd had in it, didn't change anything else other than rings and bearings, and i picked up about 4-5mpg. this was with the same cam, exhaust system, ignition, intake and carb, heads and all. i was just going to freshen the short block with rings and bearings but i had a few cracked piston skirts so i went ahead and put the flat tops back in and it made a huge difference in mileage. unfortunately i was too busy to build the short block myself so a friend who was an engine builder did it for me and he torqued the rod bolts to the specs for a 302 and they eventually backed off causing catastrophic failure of the motor, including a windowed block. dammit!!!!!
Ouch! Good illustration of why Trish's boyfriend (SVTCobra306 over on the 5.0 Forums here and on HPJ) is pretty doggone picky about anybody besides him wrenching on his '94 Cobra. Mine already received 30-over TRW flat tops -at my expense- when the bottom end was rebuilt (it's now a 357 Cleveland) before I actually owned the car; so I'm a little ahead right there. There are just a few time-consuming (in my world) details to finish up, like the new lifters, the Performer intake to fit the Holley 4160 presently sitting on a funnel, 16 straight pushrods, etc, etc. The Aussie heads will probably come along someday; though I will be holding out 'til my "Super-Secret Stash of Funds" is successfully replenished after the big drain known as the "2009 Yuma Jaycees' Silver Spur Rodeo". (The Rodeo Chairman usually ends up dumping $2k-$4k out-of-pocket on rodeo-related stuff over the year prior to and during his Rodeo) If I'm not totally tapped out after next Valentine's Day weekend (my Rodeo dates); I may even be able to hold out for some aluminum AFD heads and the matching (and much better) intake. Just have to wait and see. I found out today that the project I was playing with (in the back of my mind for after the Cougar) has gotten away from me...... My son's 4-H leader told me he was made an offer he couldn't refuse for the '58 F100 sitting in his back lot. :damnit: Oh well, probably for the best - although if it shows up at Midnight at the Oasis with an SBC (instead of an Aussie-fied 400 or another 406 FE) under the hood, I'm gonna all over it!
definitely just as well, the 58 body style is butt ugly. i much prefer the 53-56 and the 64-66 pick'em-ups better and the 67-79 too for that matter. i still want another ranchero too, but this time i'm looking for a 68/69, preferably a 69, though i'd settle for a 70/71
