Does anybody know the 'for sure' answer to the correct oil filter size for the GT? It looks like a Fram "2" (Motorcraft 820) from peering down at it from above with the hood open.

I'm getting close to my 1st change I always change out factory oil at 1000 miles.

Also: got some neat new 0w40 Mobil 1 which I think will be great for this application.

Don't know for sure, but all of the 4.6s to date use the Motorcraft 820.

Don't go with the 0-40 oil . Ford explicitly specifies 5-20 - synthetic.

Like the other guy said.. DO NOT use 0-40 oil! In an instance of severe engine failure, the FIRST THING Ford checks is oil viscosity. Ford and Honda went joint on MAKING a new oil weight, 5W20. The motor works best with this oil, and that is why it is labeled right on the oil cap. Royal Purple makes 5W20 Full Synthetic and Ford offers their own Full Synthetic 5W20. Don't screw yourself and put anything else in.

Also, yes... The 05 GT takes the same oil filter as the older 4.6s. Motorcraft FL-820S.

    Mobil 1 0-20 is the 5-20 application.

the oil filter for the new GT is FL 820s, and the oil is 5W20. do yourself a favor and use the Ford Motorcraft filter and oil. especially not fram, check the filter quality characteristics between oil filters and you will see that Motorcraft filters are up there with the best, definitely better than fram, ac delco and mopar.

the engine is specifically designed for the 5W20 oil, so use it! it is a lighter oil which reduces friction and improves fuel economy and helps with emissions. GM and Chrysler are starting to use it too, following the lead by Ford and Honda.

    hope this helps

    reevaluated

I reevaluated and will go with the Mobil 1 0w20 in the winter, and 4 quarts of 0w20 mixed with 2 quarts of 0w40 in the summer.

BTW. I'm a mech engr with specialized training in lubrication engineering so I'm confident with the above selections.

Why can't the motorcraft and FRAM sites have 2005 filter data yet. Ford are you listening?

    Thanks for the info.

I really wouldn't go away from 5w20 man. Ford is hardcore on the oil used. If you ever have a problem with the motor internally.. we WILL check the oil and it will void the engine warranty... If you want to deal with that, then go ahead and use it. There is a reason Ford and Honda spent millions and millions making the grade of oil... it works best in all conditions, winter and summer, and you should just stick with it.

0W-20 Mobil1 is the approved Ford weight for 5W-20.

This is some excellent advice. There are discussions on some F-150 sites about failures in the VVT mechanisms on the the 5.4V - 3V engines. The common denominator in these failures appears to be owners who are NOT putting in the proper weight oil. I got this info 2nd hand, but the person who told me said putting heavier weight oil than recommended may be the cause of the problems.
