My RPM gauge doesn't work, I don't really need it because I know when to shift just by listening (i think) but I don't know if I'm redlining or not.. Does anyone know how this could be fixed?
If you redline, you will know it... Spark gets cut, and sounds funny, but I can't help you on fixing it.
First thing to check would be the ignition module. That's what sends the signal to your tachometer. 1987-1990 cars, it is the grey rectangle attached to the side of the distributor. 1991-1993 cars, it is a grey rectangle attached to the intake manifold. They are more prone to go bad on the 1991-1993 cars it seems. Of course check your wiring for any corrosion, fraying, tears, loose connections, etc. If none of this fixes it, you may need to hit the junkyard for a tachometer.
If you can't tell whether or not you're redlining it, you need to check your hearing....redline is at 6250 RPM. You'll know it if you're hitting in excess of 4000 RPM, even. BTW why's a tach so essential? My tempo didn't have one. I just learned to drive by ear.
Like I said, I drive by ear.. I was just wondering when I'm shifting currently.. I drive a 1993 2.3L LX
I misread your post, I thought you said you couldn't drive it by ear. Regardless...you'll get a feel for it soon enough. As long as the car isn't lugging after you shift, or totally screaming (RPM-wise) BEFORE you shift, it'll be fine.
