I had thisproject car on the back burner but it seems I may have to drive it sooner than later. But I need a steering box and steering column. My question is what year(s) mustangs are compatible with my 67? I plan on trying to get one from the junk yard. And I can all but guarantee there will not be any 67's out there. SO I am hoping I can use one out of a 5.0 or some thing. Please advise.
There were two different ones in 67, and which date the newer ones were used depends on which factory Basically they have long-shaft (early) and short-shaft (late) versions. Mine was a San Jose car made in November 1966 and it had the long-shaft. Have you priced new steering gearboxes?
Not yet, but I have heard from other folks that they range from 500 to 700 bucks. If possible I would like to upgrade the steering, seeing as I am planning on putting a 5.0 engine in it eventually. But at this point I just want to fix the steering the most cost effective route.

Oh, and I forgot, if you get it out of a Mustang, get the column also. 68 Tilt or non-tilt fit in addition to the 67. I would get a collapsible as well for safety reasons.
If he gets the '68 column, he'll also need a '68 brake pedal. The '68 pedal has a different bend to clear the fatter collapsible section at the bottom.
Sorry to highjack, but I have a collapsible '68 column I was planning to swap into my '65 when I replace the steering box. Should I be looking for a new brake pedal for clearance? I have an Auto, so no clutch pedal.
I'm in the bay area, ,,,,I have a 68 mustang for parts. It's manual but it may have been converted to manual, don't know. I believe 68 is when ford started with the collapsable column. I was going to swap it into my 67 but it's not a big deal to me, just more work to do. PM me if you're interested, I have the column, box and the pedal and whatever else you'd need. But you'll have to remove it all yourself. That would be a good thing, so you know how it should go in. Anyone know what a fair price is for a 68 column?
I never tried it; all my research and frustration deals with '67-68s. I'm pretty sure you will need a different pedal, though.
I have an AT-67 arrangement, I took the collapsible part of the 68 column and adapted a 67 top so i could use the woodgrain steering wheel. The job was trickier than I thought and I am considering going back to the heart peircing solid shaft but the rack and pinion I have (TCP) is for the collapsible style shaft...sigh. So I continue with adapting the 68 column and internals with the 67 upper-collar. Now you tell me I need new freaking pedals? AAAARRRRGGGGHHH! You sure?
No, I'm not 100% sure. I found tons of BS information regarding the subject. I read and was told that both pedals are different for a '68, but I installed a '67 clutch pedal with no problems. My factory '68 brake pedal has a large bend in it while '67s do not, but I've seen pictures of '68 pedal assemblies that are the same .
Cool, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. This weekend looks like it will be the first Saturday of less than 98 degree temps in over 5 months, I am hoping to finally get some more work done on the old girl. I'm going to push the steering column towards the top and see what fits. As always I'll post results here.
The bend appears to be the same in my both my 67 and 68. Both cars are automatic. The 68 has power assist, the 67 does not. Anyone else have info on this?
Oh crap! I said I'd check mine out and post results and or pics. Well i checked it out and took pics, I just forgot to follow through. let me say that for a November 1966 Stang (67 model year) from San Jose the 1968 column (of unknown date and factory) fit fine beside my factory PDB pedal. Was approximately 7/16ths of space at the closest point.
