I am converting a 4 speed mustang II to a t5. All that I have read about the conversion includes some mods to the transmission cross member. I was wondering if anyone has done this mod and can offer info to make it easier. Also if it is any easier doing the mod by adding subframe connectors. You can email me at staticpromo@yahoo.com thanks Dave
As far as my experience going from a 4 speed to the T5, the connectors didn't help. As far as the crossmember mount, the best I have seen is under a thread here, labeled AOD installed by Cobraii351. There are other ways around the crossmember mount, but this is by far the best I have seen. You will also have to check your pinion angle when you finish as you will probably have changed the driveshaft angle without realizing it. Pretty much everyone who has done this swap has encountered it. Hope this helps some, I am sure you have read up on this swap in other places, so I won't get too involved with everything. Good luck!!
Here's a write up on a T-5 swap using the previous common method, i.e. moving the transmission crossmember rearwards about 6 inches using long bolts and spacers: Mustang II Network - T5 Transmission Swap The previously mentioned article on moving the transmission mount in an AOD install is here: http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/784590-aod-installed.html You will need to determine for yourself how much work you want to do on repositioning the transmission mount. The simpler method does not seem to provide as much direct support at the newer method. I would feel comfortable using the easy method on my 2.3L with a T-5, but would not want to use it with a hipo V8.
And I'm pretty sure "the simpler method" is at the very least partially responsible for the 'issues' we regularly read about with this swap. And I wouldn't be the least surprised or shocked to someday read or learn those using "the simpler method" had their shifters fall through the floor.
