Has anyone swapped a T-56 into their SN-95? I'm thinking about adding one to my Christmas list. The one in the car can't be speed shifted and I don't want to mess with rebuilding it. Plus, the 4.10's could use that 6th gear! My questions:

Will the T-56 bolt right up?
Does it need an 11" flywheel, or will mine work?
Is the shifter in the same location?
    Will I need a shorter/longer drive shaft?

Basically, if anyone has made this swap, what will I be getting myself into? I'd really like that 6th gear...

The Viper spec has too extreme ratios for a mustang. D&D also sell the Ford T56 that fits better, and they are the cheapest. Either T56 need a shorter driveshaft.
But yeah, 6 speed is sweet...

Thanks for the input. Did you need to get a new tranny cross member as well? It looks like the original cross member won't work. Also, how much was your drive shaft? I'm hoping I can use the aluminum flywheel I already have in the car. I'm concerned that I'm going to have to go to an 11". What is in your car?

It looks like there are kits out there for about 3K, but I was hoping to piece a setup together for cheaper. Lastly, did you have any issues with shifter location, or does it come up in the same place in the car? This is going to be my winter project...

Sal, I don't know the specifics of the tranny mount in a 96-98 GT swap. In Cobras, the tranny crossmember brackets are bolted to the chassis, so I have moved them where necessary. You may try to get those from Ford.
The entire clutch will work unless you get a Viper T56.

From doing some trans research for myself as of recently.
I believe the best choice out there is a TKO 500.

I have the 600, but the gearing is not optional and i feel it sucks. 2.87 first isn't enough, and a .62 OD also sucks.
Mine was a package all NIB, that i saved about a grand on, that's why i bought it.

The tko 500 with stock first gear ratio (i think 3.27) and .68 OD (fifth) is what i wish i had.

I can tell you this, you can powershift these tran at will, and it's quite the feeling.

And you likely won't get a T56 in the car and running for much less than $3000.
