i have a friend that has an 86 turbocoupe. he just bought a t04e hybrid from "xs power" he is having problems with it because he thought it was a direct bolt on and i've been helping him with things that he needs to change. i'm not to sharp on turbos so i was wondering if someone with experience could help clue us in to what all needs to be done for the t3 to t04e hybrid conversion. if someone knows where a good write up of it is i would appreciate the help. a few questions we have about it: 1) is the t04e hybrid oil cooled only? the stock was oil and water 2) the oil feed and return lines are located horizontally from each other when bolted up as compared to vertically is this ok? 3) has anyone dealt with xs power? and are they reputable? 4)should the t04e be a direct bolt on? 5) is there a better (as in bolt on friendly) t04e out there rather than the one offered by xs power? 6)nothing else seems to fit besides the turbo to the exhaust manifold. all the stock pieces won't work with it. does everything need to be fabricated from the ground up with the new t04e? thanks in advance for anyones help!
1) yes, oil only. 2) no, you need to loosen the bolts on both sides of the center section and rotate it so they point up and down. 3) Yes, all the turbos they sell blow to pieces almost instantly, as well as the hybrids being WAY too big for a 2.3 engine. 4) No 5) Yes, anything from a reputable turbo shop, not a chinease importer like XS...and one with 2.3 friendly specs. 6) Yes, everything has to be fabbed up if you use their turbo.
what kind of turbo setup would recommend for a stock 2.3L. give me a low end(basic) and the high end(bells and whistles like intercooler) setup not just a cheap vs $$$. he needs to replace his garret t-3 the bearing is shot and there is shaft play. what at least is a good start for performance on these engines? 1) what is a good company to go with as far as a new turbo? 2) what about a rick gillis valve? how do they work 3) why is the hybrid too big? 4) is there any reason why we should not try loosening the center section bolts ourselves(ie clearences)?
1) turbonetics...is good 2) the gillis valve fools the WG into thinking it is making less boost by blocking the vaccum the WG needs to fully open so you make more boost. 3) A hybrid is not to bid it depends on the specs you went with...i am running a Hybrid with a .63ar and a super 60 exhaust side...so basically should spool a little later then the stock t-3. Sorry to say i have seen some pretty poor stuff come from xs but stinger can sell you just about everything you need for the turbo swap and if your spending the money for a hybid i hope you ditched the cast manifold.....you wont be very happy with it. [/IMG] thats a pic of my motor...with my hybrid...i used stingers manifold...because i ddint want to spend 600 on a turbo and have it spool like a turd.....but im also using a boport head and a essy 2277 cam so i have more than enough volume to push the hybrid....anymore questions let me know...
Honestly, the best turbo for him would be another stock T3. They are only 100-150 bux for a good used one and you can make about 300hp to the wheels before it's time to upgrade...which is when the injectors and air meter also have to be upgraded. 1) Precision Turbo, Majestic, Evergreen, Innovative, etc. 2) They are a good purchase...work well. 3) Because it's too big Literally, the turbo is just too damn big to work correctly. It won't even build boost until after 4500 rpm and may not even reach full boost before the rev limiter. You will also experience surge because the 2.3 doesn't flow enough air for the turbo. 4) no reason, you just loosen, rotated, and tighten back up.
An alternative that I thought was really cool is machining the stock compressor housing for a T4 wheel. I think it's an M-trim wheel that was used, I don't remember. I have a pic of one from somebody's car on SVOCA, but I likewise forgot whose. If I can ever find an SVO-specific compressor housing, I'll probably do that.
i have bought a precision turbo which is made by garrett. i got the sc23. it is a pretty sweet turbo. oil lines only no cooland tho. it was a universal one. it bolts right up and uses an internal wastegate like the stock one. i got an exhaust manifold from huron alloys in canada through motion dynamics and a adjustable waste gate through motion dynamics. the setup works swell. no problems at all.
