agreed with the above. WHen I rebuilt mine it was hard to hold one still and spin the other one (not enough oil I guess on teh sycros) but I could still do it. Once it was in and back out of the car after running for a week I could do what you are describing. Just grab one and spin the other. in neutral they should be able to spin semi-freely of each other. Sounds like you got it though.
T5 - shifter won't move

put it back together again this morning. It works fine except for 5th and Reverse. I noticed last time that the little piece that goes in the grove on the 5th and Reverse bar is bent. I took a couple pics. The local tranny shop is closed today. I may end up taking it to Autozone and see what they think.
Give me your opinion on this. I can't move that 5th/Reverse selector with my hands either. How hard is it to replace that little piece that's bent? Can you buy just the one piece?

I meant to post an updated "results" post a while ago, but kept getting side-tracked.
After $323 at the tranny shop (which $250 of that could have been avoided if I would have just removed the tranny and taken it to them to begin with to put my gear back on), I now know what the problem was.
When I was putting the tailhousing back on, I couldn't get it to go, so I got out the hammer for a little persuasion...bad idea. I guess in the process I bent the 5th reverse lever and I think the rod that it goes on too. $75 in parts and roughly $250 in labor and I'm back in business.
Moral of the story: Know when to use a hammer to persuade parts to go back on. Sometimes that works...this time it didn't.

that tailshaft hangs because 5th gear gets bumped and pushed inwards, then it hits the tail. the trick is to pull out on fifth gear again, pull out towards the rear of the trans till it clicks in place then the tail will go back on.
i had the same issues on my first build, wacked it with a sledge hammer, and it promptly fell onto the cement floor, the entire trans. I walked away for an entire year.
