I have been doing my best to search the forums here as far as using a modern serpentine setup in an older mustang. My 70 mach 1 was in a fire, and half the original pulleys will no longer rotate. I thought today I would go down to ecology and take an entire serpentine setup off a 5.0, replace accessories as needed, measure for the belt, and use that. Then I come to find out apparently there are several timing covers? And the rotation of the pump is determined by the timing cover? The engine I have for the car now is a 351w. I got the core for $50.00, I actually don't know what year it is. A local shop built the bottom end. It was not a originally a roller motor, but I thought I remember the machinist telling me it was a mid 80s engine. Is there any way to tell what timing cover it has from this picture? Sorry about the terrible picture, the shop where I am putting the car together is an hour away and I can't get a front pic. The aftermarket balancer has all the bolt patterns, including the 4 bolt pattern for modern crank pulleys. My 70 mustang was originally driver side radiator, but I don't have a new radiator yet so I guess that could be changed? I am not sure if I will run a mechanical fuel pump or not, if that is a barrier to the serpentine working then I will use the mallory 140 electric I have for another project. So any help/ideas? I really don't want to spend a grand on a march setup. What would be the best car to nab a serpentine setup from? There are lots of 5.0s at the local ecology.
The one in the pic is a std rotation cover. The tell tale is the fuel pump boss. There's also a std rotation late 80's cover that's missing the fuel pump boss. The 1979-1985 Mustang water pump is a reverse rotation that fits the std rotation cover, but it doesn't cool as well as the 1986-1993 pump, which was completely re-engineered along with a revised timing cover. The ports on this cover and pump are reversed from the earlier covers and pumps. The reversed cover & pump was also used on the 1986-1997 5.0 & 5.8's in the pickups trucks. These reversed covers do not have a fuel pump boss. That's the easiest way to tell them apart, except for the 1986-1991 Crown Vic/Town Car/Marquis 5.0's cover. Th eleft cover is a reverse rotation cover, the right cover is a 70's std rotation cover. You can see between these two the reversed coolant ports.
D. Hearne, thanks for the info... Shortly after posting I actually went to the local pick a part because I had some time and it happened to be 1/2 off day. I pulled an entire serpentine setup minus the water pump and smug pump off a 5.0 Mark 7. So I have the brackets and all the pulleys. Is there a water pump I can use on my standard rotation cover that will be the right depth to work with all this equipment? Or something close enough to space it with washers, etc... Or would it be easier just to change the cover? Thanks for any help
Both the Stang/Lincoln Mark VII pumps and the std rotation pumps are the same length I think. But you won't be able to use it with those pulleys, the waterpump has to be run backward to route the belt around it. The only pump that will come close is the 79-85 Mustang pump. It's a reverse rotation that fits the std rotation cover, like I posted before. It doesn't cool as well as the 1986-93 pump and cover though.
