i have a dilemma, im in the process of prepping my 65 coupe for paint. i went to a paint store today and the color im looking for is 04 ford sunburst orange. ill be doing a bc/cc with a pearl to kinda change the color a lil. that paint, clear coat. pearl, hardner ect will cost me about 350 for 2 1/2 pts of paint and 2 pts clear. my dad and i will be spraying her, weve only painted two other cars and they came out nice except there was "orange peel" in the second truck. weve been told you gotta sand alot after each coat to get that peel out. Now my question is...should i continue to do the job myself or take her to a paint shop and have her painted. i would still do the body work myself. im not going to spend 2k or whatever on a paint job but i do want her to look good, thats why im going with the bc/cc. Whats everybodys opinion on this? i just need some inputs from others who maybe have gone through the same thing. thanks guys
If you can do it and do a decent job you should because its doubtful you will find better for less than 2k
Hi, I would go ahead and paint it yourself. You have to have fun sometime, right. Anyway, it would be great if you knew someone who could help you with the paint mixing and gun settings. If applied right, you should have a minimum of finish wet sanding. Also... Yes, paint is important, but, the bodywork is everything. As they say in my brothers body shop, painters get all the glory, but the bodyman does all the work. You can have hundreds of hours in bodywork compaired to two days for painting, sanding and buffing. Also, bad bodywork will always show through the best paint job. I would prime and block the car until you think it is just perfect and them do it again. Go over every square inch of the car a couple of times before you even think about paint. your sanded primer should have the same look to it as you desire on the finished car. Good luck and have fun. SN65 PS: PM me when you are ready to paint and I will put you in touch with the lead painter at my brothers bodyshop. He will be happy to go over the most important steps and settings with you. Again, good luck with your project.
Thanks SN65. i hate doing body work, after the first car i did(65 falcon ranchero) i told myself i would never do body work again, but here i am. at least i have a little better understanding of what to do. i also wanted to add that ive been following your sn65 project. youve got yourself a killer project, i enjoy watching your steps! ill forsure let you know before i do the paint, i can use as much help as i can get. thanks again! -jeff-
be sure to block the car at least twice. Orange peel can be caused by a lot of things. Two major causes would be that the paint went on too thick or that there was moisture on the surface or in your spary line. I would do it yourself. As One2Gamble said, you wont get a decent paint job for under $2000 and they will probably wont want to use your paint. What paint/clear are you using? Omni? global?
montana clear and dupont bc. does anybody know of a good metallic orange that isnt to dark but isnt to light? all i can look at are these stupid chips and they dont really show much.
the Ford colors are pretty cool. My car was originally going to be painted in a color similar to nissans Lemans Sunset. I have seen a 66 coupe in Tangelo Pearl and that looked pretty cool but it is ORANGE. The Chevrolet metallic orange is also decent, you should go check out the dealerships. Almost everyone is making a n orange now as its the "hot" color. http://www.cruisenewsonline.com/Goodguys5thSpringNats/55ChevyPickup.jpg I think thats tangelo pearl http://www.clanmclean.net/gallery/albums/z-prepurchase/OrangeZ_2.jpg thats lemans sunset
i went to the chevy dealer today to look at the sunburst orange but they didnt have anything. they have a new color out which is called sunburst orange 2 which looked a lil more metallic. but i still have not seen a car with either color. one2gamble...the orange on the truck you posted is about the shade of orange i want but i want it metallic. thanks
look into tangelo pearl, it is metallic...sort of. Its not metallic in the sense that it has heavy flake in the paint but it has more of a fine glitter like consistancy.
i actually think its a "house of colors" color. Your not limited to manufacturer colors. PPG, Sherwin Williams etc etc all have their own colors to chose from also.
