OK Forum Guys, need some help. I just want to verify that I won't screw anything up. I have my T-5 ready to bolt up to my engine. I am using a flywheel from a 289, 157 tooth 28 oz all that jazz. I bought a new 10" cluth kit from autozone listed to fit my 1976, 302 engine. Now my question. The pressure plate holes on the flywheel are scattered around with 2 distinct diameters. My pressure plate lines up on the inner series of holes. BUT none of these have threads in them. Can I tap these and bolt my cluth up to it with no weird balance problem? They appear to be centered on the flywheel. Any comments will be appreciated. thanks
What bell housing are you using?? I think the flywheel will not work with a MII bell. Unless someone has done this swap, and done it well, don't believe what you read from them. Seems people read the same bad information enough times that information becomes Gospell. Lots of people can rattle off part numbers and talk a good story. Doesn't mean they know how to put the stuff together. Or what to measure, look for, and watch out for while doing it. /Rant Your dillema is exactly why I do things as assemblies. No beat to fit, paint to match,a no wonder if it's going to come unglued ..... Well, it DOES minimize the 'ungluing' potential. No, you can't just tap the holes. IIRC Fords (and I've seen too damned many to be certian if it's all Fords) use a shoulder bolt/ bolt with a close tolerance bolt to position the pressure plate on the flywheeel. I'm trying to remember if there are any pressure plates with dowel pins ... they all run together ... Anyhow, you would need to counter bore each bolt hole then tap it. You would be further ahead to have a machine shop do this for you. You would be spot on to use a plate and disk matched to the wheel, and a wheel matched to the bell.
T-5 bellhousing Wart, appreciate your comments on the whole mixing and matching and beating it to fit. Maybe I did get some wrong info. From reading this forum here is what I understand to be true. 1) The 289 and 302 pre-1980 use a 28 oz imbalance. 2) I am using a T-5 bell, so I bought a 157 tooth, 13.25" 289 flywheel. 3) I am converting from automatic, so I have obtained pieces as needed, sorry, not enough room or cash to get complete units or donor cars. 4) my trans was from a an '89 and I still am unsure about driveshaft length. I am crossing my fingers. I think I will take clutch kit back, and try to match to flywheel, which I was told was from a 289 engine. I assumed the 10.5 clutch would fit but maybe earlier fords used an 11" thanks again andy
Check this thread over at .net you can also contact Dick Ginther as he has already done this swap on his KC. http://www.mustangii.net/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1264
I have to agree with wart here. Match the clutch and pressure plate to the wheel. I wouldnt even trust a machine shop on tapping the holes. When those assemblys come apart its very ugly.
