I bought a Tri-Ax shifter for my '90 GT back in '98 or '99. In the first summer I had the handle break off right at the base of the threads. Called Steeda they sent me a new one. problem fixxed. In the past couple summers I've been fighting with a constantly coming loose shift lever on my shifter.

2 weeks ago my shifter stops shifting while going down the road. I pull over and pull the console cover off and see that one of the bolt loosedup and fell out of the handle. I threaded it back in hand tight and drove home.

Sick off this problem (3rd time it's happened) I went out and bought longer bolts and nylock nuts. When I wen tto solve this problem permanently I discovered that the Steeda handle has no longer got any threads in the handle part. They've worn almost completely away. The shifter part is fine. So I tightened up the nuts/bolts and it seams fine, but I'm still mad about the worn out shifter handle threads.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Tri-Ax shifter handle?

Mine kept coming loose for the first few weeks I had it, it came real loose one day pulling into Taco Bell. Fortunately I had my tools in my trunk, so I got them out and tightened the bolts down TIGHT. Haven't had a problem since.

Are you using the lock washers that come with it? I was having this problem too then relized I didn't have the washers on. Haven't had a problem in 2 years.

That's true, I had forgotten if you don't have those on, then the bolts will come loose REAL easy.

Yeah I used them and then I tried replacing them with different ones when they didn't stay locked. The second one's didn't hold either. So I nylocked them. They can't back out now.

I have a tri-ax and have never had this issue. I had mine installed professionally though and I think they also used some "loc-tight" on the threads which I do believe Steeda recommends.

Locktite was NOT in my instructions when I got mine or I would have used it. Hind sight being what it is, I would use locktite now.

That's surprising that mine made mention of the "loc-tight". In fact, it said you should also use the stuff on the 4 bolts that hold the base to the tranny.

The reason being is as you know the tranny gets hot and cold, so I guess the bolts just flex and retract and eventually work themselves loose. I even had to use some on the threads of my shifter handle to prevent my insulated Steeda shiftknob from unscrewing all the time. It's fantastic now!!!! No more movement on shifts. Just use a little so if you ever have to undo the bolts they won't snap off in the tranny.
