    Trouble Accelerating...is it the transmission?

My '89 2.3 4 cylinder is having a lot of trouble accelerating from a standstill or lower gears. I can slam down the pedal and still be plodding along at 5 mph, gradually and slowly making it to speed limit. Merging is a nightmare. For some reason, the problem is off and on. After I changed transmission fluid, it went great for about 20 or 30 minutes, and then went back to how it was.

I've tried both slowly pushing the pedal down and slamming the pedal down to the floor. Still goes extremely slow either way. It seems like it's having the most trouble changing from 1st to 2nd gear. Also, the car jolts when I switch from Park to Reverse or Drive. I'm not sure if they are related problems...

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Assuming the transmission is the problem. We need more information.
