Whell guys......its started This weekend, i ordered about $2,500 in parts for my car Im going Twin Turbo, DIY, and they will be mounted where the mufflers are now. People say it cant/shouldent be done. It will be. Anyhow, Im really excited to see how it turns out, and as the same time, the rest of the car is getting a make-over. I ordered 2 new Black Seats from Jegs, A new Black Carpet, and bullitt pedals for my interior. I ordered a new Saleen S281 spoiler, paint guns, and DSG paint for my car, im also gonna try and paint it myself. Its gonna be great. Im working on getting the TT up and running first, as that is the most work there, i have to fab up a complete oil return system with a pump, plumb the lines through the intercooler, and install my new 42lb inj's and a blow throug MAF. Then take the car to have it dynotuned again. I cant wait!.....also along the way i need to throw in a new clutch that will hold the power. anyhow, ill be making a picture thread at turbomustangs.com with my progress
Damn dude, you got some balls to try something like that. Good luck, I hope everything goes well for you.
i hope you don't think i was telling you in your other post, that it can't/shouldn't be done. i just wanted to let you know that a turbo system is complicated enough. i also wanted to point out a very important part of a system, the oiling. and in that rear mounted design the oiling system seems to become a weak point due to it relying completely on the oil pump(s). i hope your hard work pays off in big number. and kudos for doing all the work yourself. thats a leap that some of us haven't or won't take. good luck joe
Can't wait to see the progress pics! Just imagine...not only will it be a DSG SN95, it'll be Twin Turbo, a DIY kit to boot! Good luck man, I admire your creativity
Good luck bro! This would deff be a winter project for me lol... SO how do the STS systems deal with the oiling issues??
yeah...no puddles for me...i learnt that with my first engine lol. I will be using a Outerwear on my filter, so that should shed any kind of rain, splashes, etc barring a complete submerge. depending on how the turbos work out, sizewise, i may put the filters up in the axle tub area, keep em outta the way. As far as the oil system, i got that all worked out. I threw down for a $200 diffrential oil pump, which is designed for hot oil, and should last a long time...that and some small catch cans on the turbos....and its all worked out! And yeah, i will definatly post pics and a link to the thread!
I could see a possible problem with having the intakes under the car with underbody vacuum at speeds over 40mph though. Unless you ducted them out somehow. Maybed duct them through the holes on the quarter panels behind the doors? That would solve the exposure issue too.
^^^ooo you just made a real good point....i wonder if that would work?....wow wouldent that be insane!
eh so much trouble, and so much risk at the same time, id hate for the end result to be "i told you so" so hopefully all goes well... i never understood the point of rear mounted turbos in the 1st place unless theres no room in the engine bay or somthing
actually, i figured a great way to do it. Plus this will keep my filters out of the water.....i will run a rear seat delete, as i have planned, and run the intake pipes right up into where the rear seat tub is, then 90deg out the sides to where the vents are...actually this is a great idea
Might as well make your tailpipes the turbine outlets too Or the way it's done with LS1's is they just drop the muffler and put the turbo in then run the intake tube to the front. Rear mounted turbos on a Grand Prix. . . Anyway, in reading up on the STS rear mounted turbo systems, it seems as though they work. There is a lot of debat over them but I've yet to find any really good points against the system other than the heat loss. I was thinking you can size the units to accomidate for that effect. If you wrap your exhuast really well to the turbo you might get some more heat to them but bot much. Still, wosrt case secenario for you, you spend a couple more weekends and a little more money and mount all the stuff you bought in the engine bay anyway. Also, don't forget you might need to do something with the H-pipe if you're doing 2 turbos. You might have to block the crossover.
well turbos already naturally have some lag to them before they hit full boost... turbos work off heat....so the fruther u place the turbo away from the engine, the cooler the exhaust temp, and the less effiecient the turbo is....in theory u want it as close to the primaries as possible....atleast from my understanding, this will minize lag and enable quicker spool up time. i mean think of it taking 5 secs to hit full boost at wot....you may have 400hp but the 300whp car just blew by you...heh all about usuable horsepower, but keep in mind there are still other factors which determine lag, mainly particular turbo size choice also imagine going over a speed bump and smash
turbo's work off heat? i've been totally mistaken about the innerworkings of the turbo before as the hotside powers the coldside blade whereas I thought some of the exhaust was recycled back in but, how do turbos work off heat? i was under the impression that the exhaust pressure spun the hotside therefore powering the coldside and creating pressure which was vented back to the intake. and by that, having a rear mounted turbo would totally up the lag time because of the length of piping needed
