They both have a warrenty. I have gone through 2 AZ pumps untill i got a good one. It is an easy replacement so IMHO it realy dosnt matter. As far as the thermostat goes. If you have no idea how old it is then spend the couple of bucks and change it. it is just cheap insurance.

My water pump is gushing, I need to replace it. What is really the difference between the expensive Napa pump and the cheap Autozone pump?

Since the engine has not overheated, do I really need to replace the thermostat? Engine temperature hasn't gone above normal operating temperature.

    Thanks

    Hey Frumious,

Like you said, Napa is to expensive. Some AZ stuff last's forever - luck of the draw. I'd just get it.

If you've got a Pep boys I've been real satisfied w/ their remanufactured stuff - and about same prices as AZ.

I'd leave the thermostat - didn't you recently go through all that stuff right?

I recently replaced the radiator, but I didn't replace the thermostat. That does bring up a question, though: how will I know when the thermostat dies?

well i work at a garage and whenever we do a water pump i normally suggest the thermostat and flushing the collant system......

the pump can put extra stress on the thermostat , and can leave all kind of residue in the coolant system ..

Oh, I'd replace the thermostat then. It's hard to tell unless it just dies in the more closed position, so that you can see the gauge showing the car's getting hot. Sometimes they get stuck wide open and the car never get's warm. I opened a thermostat housing one time and the therm was sitting in it sideways where the spring had rusted in two, but the water flow through it was just about right.

The project is easy, you'll spend most of your time scraping gasket surfaces.

I may do that one day, right after I put the new heater hoses on and finish painting the bedroom.
  9. Red_LX Doubt I could be of much help, unless you need por

If there's a pretty good price difference, my guess is that one pump is new and the other is remanufactured. At Advance, the new pumps are $35 and the remans are around $12. I just got a reman one for my new engine because the only thing that goes bad on them is the seals and they replace those anyway.
