hey there...Im mostly a lurker here at the site, but im always reading up on S/C....Ive been interested in a KB system for my 99 cobra, but it looks to be upward of 7K, just for the kit, let alone rebuilding the stock bottom end of my motor. Anyways, I have been reading about Hellion Power Systems, large single turbo setup for my car...also somewheres around 6K...Hellion claims to have nearly gotten rid of turbo lag, and all thats left is unlimited boost up to redline...:) both of these systems sound great, but lately, im leaning towards the turbo setup...

this isnt my question anyways. the question is, what are you getting for your 6-7 grand? are the parts alone worth this money? it seems to me, when you see the pile of parts included in a kit, that there is not 7K worth of parts sitting there. However, I do understand that one pays for the engineering of the kit, im wondering how much of the bill is R&D, and how much is parts..can a diligent person put a turbo kit together on his own, and save the R&D money? or, is this something that, if you want it, you pay the reaper, and thats the end of it...any turbo cobras out there? what do you think of your car....Thanks for letting me ramble on guys...

    Big Al

Theres got to be a good enough base of people on this site that have done the following:

1 buy a KB kit and install it themselves....if enough of you guys out there posted the $$s you put into your kit, plus some extras (some of you guys maybe did nothing to your existing motor, some of you guys may have rebuilt your bottom end, some of you guys may have bought a new brand name short block, maybe some of you guys rebuilt your old motor yourselves) that one could make an educated estimate of what it takes to go this route

2 buy a turbo kit and install it themselves...same as above as far as how much or how little went into prepping the motor/chassis

3 the do-it-yourselfer....homegrown turbo or sc kits, swap meets, used parts, etc

At one time, I fell under #3, I would hit swap meets, get hold of parts cheap, etc, and build alot of things myself...but the last car I did this with was a 50 ford, total homegrown hotrod, all 50s custom with lots of parts from other cars, buick grille, chop top, lots of things that were labor intensive not $$ intensive...I built a chevy 350 for this car, NA, I would have to say I did it very cheap, ported and polished the heads myself, swap meet pistons, rods, intake, carb, etc, swap meet m21 trans, swap meet rearend, you get the picture...

I have been out of *tinkering* for awhile, and now that I have my cobra, im feeling the urge to do things to it..However, it seems like its a $$ driven market to make any mods of note, such as a nice supercharger add on. getting into 6-10K to do a supercharger on a car is alot of dough to me, but if that is what it is, then that is what it is, and ill stop whining about it:) It just seems like it can be done alot cheaper, if someone, me, was willing to swap meet the parts, maybe take a look at someones turboed car and mimic the piping ,etc, to build my own kit. Here again, I feel alittle in over my head with attempting to hot rod my late model car~I mean, when I did the motor in my old Ford, it was a full race cam, high compression pistons, ported polished heads, high rise manifold topped off with a holley 750, a 4 spd, and a 4:11 rear end to make it go...it just seemed alot easier back then....

to my original question, is the 6-8K charged for a supercharger kit from a major manufacturer, like KB, or Hellion Power Systems, is it all parts, or is it half R&D? are we lazy or smart to let someone else do all of the thinking for us, then just *pay the man*, or is this something that us mere mortals couldnt figure out in a million years, so the price of going faster is 6-10K....

now THAT was a ramble...thanks to anyone who responds....thanks for listening

    Al

ps. I have a 99 cobra vert, i love the car, but like all of u, I want more power. I also have that 50 ford still, and I am getting ready to redo it. I have a guy that is going to possibly give me a 90-92 mustang GT w a blown motor, and im thinking of turning that into a track car....Lastly, not this year, but at the end of the next coming year, I was planning on getting an 07 Shelby Cobra...would u think this is too much crap in the corral...? would u even consider the new cobra if you turboed your 99....I dont know, more rambling...thanks again for listening, U guys are cool
