PBR front Calipers w/ stock rear drums?

I'm in a hurry to convert my car over to 5-lug so I can buy larger wheels & new tires (trying to avoid buying another set of tires for stock size wheels).

I have a set of complete front & rear calipers off a '99 V6. Right now the north cobra brakets I need to keep stock track width with these brakes are a little pricey, plus a new MC and possibly a new booster also adds to the expense.

I'm wondering if I can use the PBR calipers and run them with some 5 lug drums on the rear axle just to get the swap finished. Would I still need to change my master cylinder with this setup, and if so which one would I need? What about the brake booster?

I would think you could run it as is. i dont see where all this bigger booster stuff is neccesary anyways.

i am running a disk brake 95gt rear end with 95 gt front disks up front with a 4cylinder master cylinder and booster and my car stops fine.

I would like to see some answers also. I have a stock master/booster/rear drum...but I have Cobra front calipers and rotors. The car stops fine and all, but that's because I am used to it. When I drive my Wife's Explorer, THAT is when I can tell the difference. Her pedal feels much better and the truck brakes better.

It's one of those "It works...but it could be a lot better" type of things.

IMO, you need the MC setup at least. Using the drums is no big deal, but way back i used lincoln front calipers which aren't much bigger than the stock calipers, and the pedal was soft. Yes the car stopped, but it didn't give you a "safe" feeling.
I returned the cheap chain store calipers and got ford ones, still soft. Returned those and got stock ones again, problem fixed.

An MC conversion is not that expensive. And so far my pedal feels good and the car stops well without the booster (bullit fronts, cobra rears).
So if you are in a hurry, do the MC at the least.

I would do the MC.

You are going from 60mm pistons to dual 44.5mm pistons. It requires more fluid volume than the stock MC is capable of.

What's the point of putting nice brakes on if you aren't going to use them to their full potential?? I have these brakes stock on my '03 GT and the will suck your eyeballs out when you get into them. They have good potential. (of course when i had Cobra brakes on it stopped even harder)

I run that exact setup in my 88gt currently...Have the rear disc stuff for it but will screw w/ it in the winter. Yes, i did upgrade the MC and booster and currently use it w/ the stock rear drums...

Im running the same setup. 99GT calipers up front and stock drums in the rear.

Up untill a month ago it was working great. Now the rest of the brake system is showing its age... :(

But going to a bigger MC wont hurt anything.

you can do it, i did it for a year.

you may not be getting a full amount of brake fluid to the front calipers though. i updraded to a 93 cobra master cylinder with my cobra fronts.

MY 91 notch has that set up.
STOCK Fox body V8 booster and master. (4cyl and 8cyl masters are the same)
STOCK Fox body prop valve.
PBR's up front
STOCK drums brakes in the rear.

Car stops excellent.

No need to change over to SN95 booster and master.

But it may stop even better with a larger booster and/or larger bore MC.

i'm running the 93 cobra stuff and love it with my rear disk. my pedal was pretty hard before, but i think my factory booster was faulty. its mostly a personal preferance thing and how stiff of a pedal you like. a 94/95 v6 master/booster will be the softest pedal, then the v8 cards, then the 93 cobra, then the turbo coupe.

I am running the PBR calipers up front and stock drums on the rear, I am going to run the stock V8 booster and a master cylinder from a 85 lincoln towncar on my 86 model.

I had this setup on my car for a few months and you can do it and the brakes work, just like stock though if not worse :notnice: and I never understood why until I read into what has to be done for the rear disc conversion and it all made sense so I did it.......AND....My car stops on a ****ing dime...its amazing I never thought a foxbody could have awesome brakes. My advice either bite the bullet and do it right or wait until you can afford to, otherwise its just a waste of time and money.
:nice:
