The "Mustang II" IFS Real Info & Debate Thread

Finally finished my 1970 fastback and I am very happy with the way it drives and handles. It has subframe connectors and front subframe stiffners to the cowl. No rattles and very stiff on our lousy roads. I used the Rod & Customs motorsport kit with my own subframe stiffners. No reason for me...

    synthetic oil in sbf

A friend in California just sent a virgin (unused) sample of Rotella T Synthetic to Blackstone Labs for analysis and they showed 1144 ppm of Phosphorus and 1281 ppm of zinc. Looks like they still have the good stuff for flat tappets. Howard

The "Mustang II" IFS Real Info & Debate Thread

I made a similar but yet different brace for the front of my 1970 sportsroof but I don't know how to post pictures. (computer ingrate). My reinforcement is on the inside rather than outside. If someone will post the pictures for me I will send them to you. Thanks, Howard:hail2:

    Steering Rack Fittings

:) In case you ever need to make a power steering hose, I have it figured out now. The pump fitting is a 16mm x 1.5 ( AER -FBM2608) and the rack fitting is a 14mm x 1.5 (Russell 648070). These are made for -6 hose. Be sure to use the Teflon stuff and steel hose ends to handle the pressure ...

    Steering Rack Fittings

 I need to make a pressure side power steering hose to fit a 1992 rack in a 1970 mustang. The return hose port on the rack is 16mm x 1.5 but the pressure side on the rack is smaller. Is it 14mm x 1.5 by chance? Of course I bought two 16 x 1.5 fittings. I live 105 miles from the store so...

    Overheating...is my fan ok?

"GENERALLY SPEAKING" if a car has the proper size radiator in it and it runs cool at idle and overheats while driving, you have a plugged radiator. I have taken them apart and rodded them out myself but it usually pays to have it done by a radiator shop. I learned this by moving to Southern...

    Drive shaft broke at 125mph

I personally would have it checked at a qualified driveshaft shop. Many times it will spring the yoke or bend the shaft when that happens. Vibrations are a nasty thing to chase. Howard:flag:

    Drive shaft broke at 125mph

Just be glad it wasn't the front driveshaft. Sorry but I could not let that opening slide by.:D

    Tucson mechanic wanted

Steve, I used to live in Tucson and a place called Eastside Engine under automotive machine shops was a reliable place. They primarily do machine shop work and rebuild engines but they also used to do this sort of thing. I believe their number is: 520-746-1311. Howard:flag:

    do not use synthetic oil

I have used Mobil1 or Amsoil in dozens of cars, trucks, tractors, and even lawn mowers with no problems. Full synthetics are universally accepted in the industry to be superior to Dino oil. If it does not work for you, you have a problem with the car. Howard:flag:

    Reproduction Interior Parts

I am about ready to order the interior parts for my 1970 Sportsroof and I wondered if their was any particular quality or fit problems from the typical parts supplier stuff. I need door panels, headliner, molded carpet, etc. Any help at all on sources woulf be appreciated. By the way, this car...

    No more Shelby parts ?

As I understand it, the Shelby deal is strictly Carrol Shelby and not Ford. Ford is clamping down on anyone using Mustang, Stang, etc. because they have to protect their product names. Ford wanted to bring back the Futura name but since they did not challenge Pep Boys when they called their...

    Best 5.8 donor?

One of the car mags just did a build on a 302 or 351 and they chose a 70's block because they said it was stronger than the 5.0 version. I will try to find the article. Howard:flag:

66 'vert - Big Block? MII front is already in!

:D Just to keep the fires burning on the MII controversy has anyone seen the April 2006 issue of Popular Hot Rodding page 80? A guy took a 1976 Mustang II v-8 model, put poly bushings in, shortened the stock coils, put on KYB shocks and sticky tires and pulled .99 g on the skid pad. Not bad for...

    need o2 tap size

I THINK most of them are 18 mm like the big tapered seat spark plugs. If you have one of the "clean up" taps for plug holes, that should work. I would compare the 18 mm tap to you O2 sensor to verify. Howard:flag:

Whats the Difference between a BOV and a wastgate?

The wastegate limits boost pressure and the blow off valve prevents the turbo from "stalling" when the throttle is rapidly closed under boost conditions. The waste gate directs exhaust flow away from the turbo inlet into the exhaust system downstream of the turbo. The BOV vents boost presssure...

    What causes smoke on decelleration?

No I do not have it backwards. Coasting against a closed throttle creates a very high vacuum in the intake tract which will pull oil past the intake valve stem seals if they are worn. Smoking under acceleration is caused by the high cylinder presssure pushing oil past the rings. It has been that...

    What causes smoke on decelleration?

USUALLY if it smokes on acceleration it's rings and on deceleration it's valve stem seals. You could pull the valve covers and give the seals a visual check without too much trouble. Howard :flag:
