97 Cobra making a loud humming on Accel

It sounds like a possibility of the rear end needing some work. They'll make a humming/howling noise under load. I'd start with checking the oil level in the differential case, see if it smells burnt or is dirty. Sometimes changing it can help. Make sure to use the Motorcraft friction...

    Interested in a 97-98 Cobra...

I have a stock '98 and get 24-25mpg on a steady cruise @ about 75mph. Mixed city and highway driving will average about 21mpg. I've seen it as low as 17, but that was with a heavy foot! Just remember that all Cobras require premium unleaded gas, which is about 20 cents more per gallon.

    fuel press or coil pack?

The normal fuel pressure for your car is 30 - 45psi. Sounds like it's at the low end of the specs. Try disconnecting the vaccuum line from your fuel pressure regulator and see if the reading goes up. The book says it should be 40 - 50psi with it unplugged. With a supercharger and that much...

    cobra backfire ?????

I don't know much about backfiring problems, but one possible cause would be faulty plug wires. Does it run ok other than when the engine speed is dropping? Is the check engine light on?

    changing my clutch

Yeah, a clutch swap is a pretty big job, but if you have access to a car hoist and transmission jack, then it's a lot easier. You'll want to have a clutch alignment tool for when you tighten the pressure plate down against the flywheel. It's always a good idea to get the flywheel resurfaced...

    Ignition question

Well, I can answer one of your questions. The PCM is located behind the passenger side kick panel. It's kinda tricky to get it in and out of there but it's do-able. Plus there's a bolt, I think it's a 10mm, that secures the wiring plug to the PCM. The manual says to disconnect the battery...

    Squeeky noise when turning

I've never used a grease injector but I'd try to slip the end under the boot. If you just can't get to it then you're gonna have to poke it!

    Button sticks in Shifter, help!

Awesome! I haven't had a chance to test drive one yet. Soon... Congrats, man!

    Unknown idiot light

It really sounds like the low coolant light.

    Fuel Economy!

The rpm should be around 2200 or so at 70mph. At least somewhere in the low 2000 range. If it's way higher, then overdrive has left the vehicle! Sounds like you've done everything there is to do as far as basics to improve the mileage. What exactly is it getting per gallon? My g/f has a...

    fuel injectors

When the injector gets 'juiced', it makes a pulsing noise. You can put the end of a long screwdriver, socket extension, wooden dowel, etc. up to the injector and put your ear on the other end. If it's receiving voltage, and the injector is operating, you'll be able to hear it. Or if you have...

    question on running lean,

I had a lean condition on mine and ended up replacing the MAF sensor. My friend who works at Ford told me that they did an upgrade on the new MAF sensors. They're not cheap, so I'd try spraying it off real good with some electrical parts cleaner, clearing the code and see if it pops up again...

    Button sticks in Shifter, help!

It doesn't sound like it'd be too hard, but then again...I've never worked on a shift lever. I just checked in the Haynes manual and find nothing on this specific part! Maybe a local garage would be honest enough to tell you if it's an easy or hard to work on part.

what does a used 3.8 cost on average?

I don't know any numbers or if they're easy to find. Being a '96, it shouldn't be outrageously priced or too hard to get ahold of. The first thing that came to my mind was to call a few Ford dealers and see if they sell what's called a crate motor for the car. Hope this helps, sorry I don't...

    Pinging on '98 Cobra

Another alternative to running octane boost is running a high octane unleaded racing fuel. There's a station not too far that sells the VP 100 octane from the pump. I think it's going for 4.99 a gallon currently. A couple gallons of this mixed with the 91 octane brings up the average a bit...

    Clutch Pedal Loose?

It kinda sounds like it could need a new clutch adjustment quadrant. They're not too expensive and I don't think it's too hard to install.

    Pinging on '98 Cobra

I don't know the exact numbers of the air/fuel mixture, but he did tell me that he richened up the mix and it improved it somewhat, but not enough to get rid of it completely. The chip has been programmed a bit richer with a couple degrees of timing pulled out and it's tolerable for now, and...

    99 Cobra Trany Fluid Change

Yeah, it's pretty easy to do yourself. After you get the car elevated, look for the plugs with a square hole. They're made for a 3/8 ratchet drive to fit... there's one on either the bottom or the side at the bottom to drain and one about halfway up on the trans case to refill it. I can't...

    Pinging on '98 Cobra

Aah, you guys may have a point, the highest pump gas available here in California is 91 octane which I've always used. Chevron, 76, or Mobil. I also try to use the stations that have a seperate nozzle for each grade of gas to avoid any residual lower grade gas or 'pump errors'. This car came...

    Spark Plug Help!!!!!

Hey! Congrats on your new ride... I have a 98 Cobra as well. The Autolite 764's are the right ones for it, but the gap that's usually called for is .052, that is unless the modifications require anything different. Try resetting the gap and see how it runs, making sure no plug wires or...
