I'm not an expert by any means, but I'd bet my money that you just threw off the computer, and you've done no permenant damage, I don't see how something could get damaged that fast, but - of course, that's just my opinion, and - i could be wrong... it happened once.

It's not neccessarily the cluster, I had the same thing happen on my first car (a 97 eclipse GSX), twice actually, i somehow kept causing the sending unit to come loose, at the other end (not at the cluster), I had no idea where it was, but the mechanics just let the engine and everything cool...

my only guess would be try resetting, park the car for a few hours and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, i don't know how long it really takes for it to reset, only time i did this i let it sit overnight.
