Drivetrain AOD intermediate clutch

I work on a tuned AOD transmission and need to replace the intermediate clutch. what is the difference between early an late clutch packs? How can I tell what I need, when Transmission built date wont help... or is the case date still determining? reverse drum is a large one if this helps..
