forged internals?

When you cast a metal you have to heat it till it melts and then pour it into a cast and it becomes brittle after doing so because you changed the grain structure of the metal. Where as in forging you start with a blank and you stamp it with a press until the shape is formed. This imparts strength to the piece.

what are they made of, why do they break easily?

They don't break "easily" by any means...I've seen more than 430 rear wheel horsepower go through them for sustained periods of time. They are however typically the first thing that does break if you make too much power (450+), simply because it's hard for a crank, or pistons to "break"...so the rods do.
