Twisted Wedge/Street Heat Trickflow Footnotes:

They are available bare or fully assembled heads feature 61cc chambers with rotated 2.02 in. intake/1.60 in. exhaust valves moved over the center of the cylinder bores, to build top-end power without sacrificing bottom-end torque. Unlike other 2.02 in. valved heads for small block Fords, the Twisted Wedge heads don't require flycut pistons with most street performance cams. Twisted Wedge heads have stock height intake and exhaust ports for use with most OEM and aftermarket intake and exhaust manifolds. They are available in versions for stud-mounted rocker arms or machined for use with Fel-Pro Loc-Wire head gaskets. Assembled heads come with valves, valve springs, locks, retainers, and head bolt washers.

Track Heat Trickflow Footnotes:

Trick Flow's Track Heat heads are ideal for the entry-level Ford bracket racer. The heads have patented 61cc combustion chambers with rotated intake and exhaust valves, 2.02 in. intake/1.60 in. exhaust stainless steel valves, .560 in. thick combustion chamber walls for added strength, and additional support risers in the water jackets. The fully assembled heads feature higher rate valve springs (135 lbs. seat pressure at 1.800 in. installed height), 10 degree locks, and manganese bronze guides. The bare heads feature the valve guides and seats already installed. They're available machined for use with Fel-Pro Loc-Wire head gaskets and are designed for stud mount rocker arms.

Bonus Head Information:

Valve Angle:

The valve angle number refers to the angle of the intake and exhaust valves in relation to the head's deck surface.

A shallower valve angle (18*) is better than the steeper valve angle (23*). The 18* head will have the valve over the cylinder head, creating a straighter shot to the combustion chamber. There are a few reasons for it being better as well:

1. The shallower valve angle allows the cylinder head designer to use a smaller volume combustion chamber to help boost the engine's compression ratio without going to large-dome pistons.

2. Valve location is important. For example, the valves in a conventional 23* head are .275 in. from the cylinder bore centerline. When the valves are close to maximum lift, they become shrouded by the combustion chamber and the cylinder walls. That hurts the engine's ability to breathe--and that hurts horsepower.

3. In 18 degree heads, the valves are right on the cylinder bore centerline. The valves are also relocated to position the intake valve closer to the bore center, and the exhaust valve closer to the cylinder wall. This unshrouds the intake valve at maximum lift and allows the use of bigger valves.

I'd love to see a comparison with TFS CNC'd 205cc heads vs. AFR205cc heads on the same day, same dyno, same operator if any of you have seen one.

Chris

Well no dyno information, which would be much better but here is a little comparison:

BOLD shows the advantage to each compared to the other.

210# of spring pressure and 70cc exhaust port.

Valve Angles: 23* for Intake and Exhaust.

Trickflow 205:

205cc Head, 65cc, 2.02"/1.60" Valves, 1.460", Dual Valve Springs w/ dampner (.600”), 10* locks, 7/16” rocker studs, no smog provisions, and not machined for o-rings. $1,990.

66cc exhaust port.

Valve Angles: Intake is 15* and Exhaust is 17*.

Looks like a nice even match to me...the Trickflow has the intake side 'won' and the AFR has the exhaust side 'won' (maybe a bit better for expending the compression for boosted application) and save $140.

Wow, thanks for the effort you put forth, here. These are the manufacturer's numbers, right? With flow benches things like pipe (?) diameter and pressure make a difference. Do you know off-hand if they were the same?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris - The AFR flow numbers are from AFR and the Trickflow numbers were from Trickflow:) They are both under 28 inches of water pressure for testing but the pipe sizes were slightly different for the test.

The AFR's pipe is not listed and the TW's had a 2" pipe. On a side note, the AFR 225 test was done with a 1 7/8" pipe. So I would presume since they only noted the 225cc test, the 165, 185, 205cc test were done with the same pipe size, possibly a bit small for the 205cc AFR's. Just an idea...

It appears the differences between intake and exhaust could easily be 'made-up for' with certain cam specs...bias towards one side or the other.

BK Cauley - I'll get you some quick info, I should have time here soon for you...

If you're referring to the numbers trickflow posted on their website for the AFRs, I think you'll find that they took their numbers from the manufacturer. Hence, the numbers are originally from AFR.

Things like the pipe diameter and pressure can make a significant difference in test results when you're talking about heads that flow so comparably to one another.

Either way, I'll bet whichever head one goes with, they'll be happy with. I'm just curious because I made my decision to buy the AFRs before the TFS 205 CNC heads were available.

Chris

I agree, either one is going to do well and appear to be very nice heads!

The AFR flow data is from AFR's website. The Trickflow flow data is from Trickflow's website.

Oh, my AFR 205 heads with the "nitrous porting" option flow approximately 20cfm more on the exhaust side from like .400-.700 lift. I can't remember the exact numbers, but AFR will give exact #'s on it if you call em. I had them written down somewhere, but lost em.

BloodReign, I've got the 80cc ports on mine.

Theoretically, I'm not sure if it is good bad or indifferent to have larger exhaust ports on a turbo car. I think it'd be good because it improves flow, which should mean quicker evacuation of the exhaust from the cylinder and hence less reversion. And, I can't see why the decreased exhaust velocity from the ports would hurt performance. After all, I don't think turbocharged engines take advantage of exhaust scavenging the way n/a and blower engines do. It's just all speculation on my part, though.

Chris

I have seen a back to back comparison dyno test on AFR 205's and TFS 205's. Both were very similar in power. I think that both were nearly identicle to the top end of the tach where the TFS ended up with a peak of about 5 to 10 hp better but IIRC the AFR's had slightly better numbers in the lower rpm's. They were so close I would probably use the cheapest of the two because you wouldn't be able to feel any difference. The test was in one of the mustang mags I don't remember which though.

BTW, Very nice comparison between the heads alot of time went into this. The only thing I see missing is the TFS 185's

rj - Thanks, I got some Trickflow Ported Track 185 information up there:

BloodReign/Fast Driver - So does the 'nitrous porting' add 10cc (70 to 80cc) on those 205's? BloodReign, that would be nice if you could 'find' those numbers again:)
