So i finally decided to order 3.73 gears. I found the kit on american muscle with the gear oil and speed cal. So i had the shop quote me for 350 bucks and thats installation of the speed cal also. However, he said that i should probably get a tune done too. Now i was going to wait till i got my full exhaust and intake finished before i even thought about getting a tune. Would i really need a tune after the gear installation.... and for what actually? Thanks!
Is the shop trying to get money out of me.... or is this standard?

You dont need a tune for a gear install and 350 is too much even with the speedo recal install. Find out how much for the gears alone and put the recal in yourself. All you have to do is splice into the DC wire under the radio.. unless you have that deleted off the car.
Gears take a good installer less than 2 hours to do. $200 is pretty much a good flat rate for an install.

The Dallas Mustang Speedcal had good instructions and was pretty easy to install. You shouldn't have any trouble with it.

CE Racing in Milford MA did mine for $200 even, and under 2 hours. I brought them all the fluids, went out to lunch with a friend who followed me, and i got a call saying it was done under 2 hours

It depends on where you take it and what the local rate is. Around here its $350-$450 for an install like that. I have a friend of mine do most my work so he did it for me for $200. Everyone was freaking out because I got it done so cheap.
Hell I priced having LT Headers put in and a local shop wanted a $1,000!! I had my old motor removed and new motor assembled and new cams and valve springs put in and put back in the car along with all the fluids and two oil changes for $1000-$1200. LOL

YOU dont need a tune, wait till you have everything done like you were saying and youll get more "bang" for your buck when the tune is done.
I paid 300 for 4:10 and fluid and thats in California were they RAPE YOU on everything

Are you auto or manual? Auto, you really need the tune to alter the shift points in the tranny due to the gear change. Otherwise, the speedcal works fine for the manual and is easy to do - I did mine is about 20-30 mins on rhino ramps in the garage.
Im a manual. I will just wait till i have all the other things installed, which shouldnt be longer then a couple of months and then tune it. I was going do that that, but the shop threw me off saying that i would need a tune now.

Even if he was an auto I would just buy an SCT Tuner and change it to 4.10s that calibrates the Speedo and changes the shift points at the same time. Thats what I did.

+1 SCT Xcal2 is good for a manual car, and very good for an automatic car.
