Stupidest thing you've ever heard about car performance

I was getting the 91 inspected a couple of months ago and a goober that works there was telling me about his "friend" who had a Fox body that had 700 hp. Interested I asked him what was done to it (big mistake on my part). Supposedly it was a "stroker" 309, that would turn 11,000 rpm, with no power adder, stock block and stock heads (they had been "worked"). With a stock T5 and stock rear. All I could do was nod my head, feign amazement, and bite down on my tongue real hard. He also was telling me how he drove it and almost killed himself because it was so amazingly fast. Worst part about it, was this guy was actually a mechanic who was working on a customer's car. :nonono:

hrmm makes you wonder

I have a two car garage that I park my white Capri on one side and my black Capri on the other side. Had both doors up while I was working on the white one and two 18/19 year old guys came in selling something for a youth program. In the middle of his sales pitch, he sees the Black 5.0, pauses and says, "Wow, a Buick Grand National!!!" So I just went with it and started talking about the turbo and how much power it puts out for a V6, etc. etc. I even went so far as to lift the hood and tell him the smog pump was the turbo! Hahaha. He snapped a bunch of cell phone pic of it to show his buddys later. I wonder if any of them finally told him it wasn't a Buick. Face palm.

I hear a kid talking about his Honda at the track. He said he added some HP when he put on a cold air and a can can muffler. He said he was pushing 300 HP. He pulls up to the line and runs a 10.53(down the 1/8 mile). We ask when he gets back to the return lane what happened. He said it was hot so his time slowed down from 8.9. I couldn't stop laughing

i think that was the honda i lined up against

At a buddies house one day and a friend of his in a 88 Accord LX comes tearing into the driveway almost hitting my Vette. He jumps out all excited telling my buddy that he just had the exhaust done and it made a huge difference on the car. My buddy asks how much HP did it add and the kid says "I don't know but its allot! It will hang with that." *points to my 99 FRC Vette*
So me and my curiosity of what exhaust would allow a $800 4 door Accord to hang with my brand new $50,000 Vette I just had to go check out. I go to the front of the car so he can pop the hood cause I figured full exhaust from the headers back. Kid gives me a look like I am a dumb ass cause I am at the wrong end of the car to check the new exhaust out. :rlaugh: So I go to the rear and see an Autozone resonator tip welded to the stock muffler....... :nonono: I started to laugh uncontrollably and the kid got offended. He was trying so hard to explain why it made so much power and how it made the exhaust come out faster. I tried for about 30 seconds to explain why it is hurting him but the loudness makes it seem faster... I gave up, he wasn't getting it.
His next mod planned was a V-Tec controller, I was gonna tell him his car didn't have V-Tec but realized he was under the impression that a controller added it. :rlaugh:

Wow... everyone has some good stories. I think this proves our society is lost. People, generally speaking are full of it. Everyone is an expert.

All too often I see these "cold" air intakes, where they think they can get colder air by sucking the air from between the exhaust manifold and the radiator. No wonder those kits cost so much.... that is some feat of physics to extract colder air from a hotter area.

And it's not just ricers, had a guy tell me a few hours ago that he changed his oil, and did a "special little trick" and gained 2.5 seconds in the 1/4

I had a guy once tell me (without seeing or knowing my car other then its a Cobra) that his Chevy would smoke me cause it runs 10's stock. I asked "ZR-1?" and he says "Nope, Trail Blazer SS. Bone stock, runs tens." In hindsight I gues he coulda been sayin 1/8th mile.

And cause ya know someone had to post it. :rlaugh:

The ss blazers have ls1 motors they are fairly quick especially for a trailblazers but 10's is ridiculous, same kid who shaved 2.5 seconds also told me the ss blazers do 210 mph "cuz it's a corvette motor"

Yeah, those SS trailblazers will get up and dance, no doubt about that but it still ain't no vette. I worked at a dealership once and the customers who bought them were not too happy with them because although they liked the power, the gas milege sucks, most reported a best of 16mpg on the highway if you were cruising the speed limit with cruise control. The 5.3 has more than enough power and gets much better milege.

Dont get me wrong, I kinda like the SS but stock for stock a 03/04 Cobra will stomp one and a CObra with as many mods as mine had would destroy him. Thats not the funny part, the funny part is he thought it was a 10 second truck box stock. I could not argue with the guy cause he was my postal carrier and I like my mail... sometimes. :rlaugh:

Something I heard last night. Went where everyone meets, there were some turbo 240SX's there. I know these cars can be very fast, but obviously not last night. My buddy called a few out but none of them would run because they had "tuning" issues. Most of these turbo 4cy people, the car never can perform and it must be the Tuning, lol. I guess I should tune my pickup truck and if I do enough tuning I can get it into the 8's right? No engine mods needed, lol. Have they ever considered that maby the problem is the anemic engine they are trying to tune?

It's the lack of pistons not the lack of tuning, although I have a buddy with a 500hp miata that would walk all over mine I still have to give him crap for having half a motor

That's what's wired about it it ran 12.6 on 300hp and a small turbo, power to weight is definitly on his side, I'd still sure as hell never drive one though
