i'm really considering buying a shift kit or ratchet shifter for my AOD. The thing is, i don't know much about this stuff. What i'm looking for is a shifter that i can put on my stock tranny that will allow me to manually shift and hold any gear i want. would a B&M ratchet shifter be the way to go or a transgo shift kit? does the transgo shift kit come with a new shifter? ANY info will help. Whats up with the B&M Hammer Shifter? thanks all.

No matter what shifter you use, the AOD only has three settings on it which are 1 / D and OD. or 1st / 3rd and 4th over drive. I raced an 88 gt with an AOD for years that was making 600hp. Here is how you can keep the car in the proper gear when racing. First drop the shifter down to 1. Launch the car and run it to the point you want to shift. Move the lever to the next notch which is D. The car will shift into second. As soon as you feel the car shift into second, immediately pull the lever back into the 1 position. I know you will be scared the first time but the transmission will not shift back into first. It will hold you in second. When you want to shift to 3rd gear, push the lever back to D. The car will shift. This is the only way you can keep an AOD in 2nd gear no matter what shifter you use. It works and wont hurt the tranny so dont be scared to try it. You will love being able to hold 2nd instead of the way early shift you are probably used to. I ran 10.20's with an Art Carr AOD long ago (1996). Have fun. Post how it turns out. P.S. I tried lots of aftermarket shifters on the AOD and always came back to the stock shifter. It works just fine.

on my 01 gt after ist i can shift it up into 2nd then drive and its an AOD

If you have a Ford AOD, the shifter should say 1, d and OD. But have 4 gears. Yes the car shifts second but you cant hold second and manually shift unless you kick the shifter back to 1.

So I can hold any gear even with the stock shifter? That B&M Hammer shifter is really talkin to me though. It just looks a little confusing. But I've heard nothing but praises about it.

You can change the shifter but you still have to do what I explained. 1 to d then back to 1 then up to d. The shifter doesnt add a 2 slot. A shifter is only a rod with a cable attached. moving the rod moves the cable a set amount. the AOD only has 3 forward setting along with Park / Reverse and Neutral so no matter what shifter you put on it, the shifting doesnt change for the transmission.

1-2-D-R-P is what it should say

How does the Hammer shifter work exactly? Do you shift it into 1, then hammer it into 2 and it springs back to the 1 position automatically for the 3-4 shift? I'm still confused as to how it works. No thread seems to have an explanation.

I think this thread is confusing because you are talking about different automatic transmissions. I have a 2000GT which has the 4R70W automatic transmission. I bought a Performance Automatics manual valve body, so I do all of my own shifting. Whatever gear I shift to, that's where it stays. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are selected with the shifter and OD is with a button. Now, to prevent accidently shifting from 1st to 3rd while racing, I bought a B&M Hammer shifter. It is a ratchet shifter. To shift from 1st to 2nd, you push the handle all the way forward and it springs back to the original location. To shift from 2nd to 3rd, you push if forward again and it springs back again. To down shift, you pull it back and it springs forward. It's a great shifter and I really like it.

jim, could you please post some pics of this set up? it sounds like it is a sweet deal, but i wouldn't like it if it ruined the "flow" of the interior...
Sorry, I don't have a digital camera, or I would be happy to. Mine looks like a totally stock installation. Higgins did the install. The housing part of the B&M shifter is inside the console with the top of the housing flush with the top of the console, just like stock. Nothing sticks up above the console except the shifter handle. There is a rubber boot around the bottom of the shifter handle.

oops, forgot the neutral, but i have the 457RW(dont know the exact number) or something like that, and it's 1-2-D-N-R-P and seperate OD button

anyways, I have no idea what my point was, just keep going with the rest

ont the 99+ auto's i belive ford changed over to the 4r70w with the pattern 1-2-D-N-R-P with the OD button on the side of the shifter. I got a B&M Hammer SHifter a while ago for my 99 gt and i love it!
