Breaking News from Autoextremist.com (March 1st at 11:15AM). Ford has just completed its powertrain certification for the new Ford GT sports car, and the final production power figures break down this way: 550HP @ 6,500 rpm and 500 lb.-ft @ 3,750 rpm. The original estimates given to the media were 500HP @ 6,000 rpm and 500 lb.-ft. @ 4,500 rpm, so the new numbers compare more than favorably. That's great news for Ford enthusiasts and especially great news for the people who are confirmed to be taking delivery of the new mid-engined beast.

I knew they would rate it 550HP once I saw a few months back that they switched to a twin screw blower.

they say that for a reason...I heard that it's because of insurance perposes that they don't like to post Hp higher than 500 hp.

insurance isn't based on HP, it is based on claims, the cars value, the cars safety, and the cost to repair the car.

but I thought I read somewhere that the rates go insanely high if they know it's got more than 500 hp regardless of cost of replacement. Thinking more on the reckless driving possibilities. I could be wrong (very likely I am wrong about the insurance angle but I think there is a reason for not posting more than 500 hp.)

I have never heard that, I guess it can't be true since Ford is now rating the GT at 550HP

The horsepower is a factor used in determining the risk the car can have in the hands of the owner, the more power it has, naturally the harder it will be to control. This has been a factory since the mid 60's in the heat of the muscle car era.

I'm sure it plays a small role but there is no rule like 50HP = 20% increase, THe "sport" factor plays a bigger role, beleive it or not 2 doors are more to insure than 4 doors on the same modle car, like a Grand Am. Insurance is mostly based on statistics, that is why an Integra or Civic coupe is more to insure than an LS1 Camaro.

Isn't the new L supposed ot have a "Supercooler" that adds a burst of 30-50hp for like 8-12 seconds or something?

Yes. It actually uses air conditioning refrigerant to provide additional cooling for teh incoming air. I guess 8-12 seconds is all it can handle before it gets overwhelmed by the heat.

As for the extra 50hp for the GT, The article suggests they just finished certification of the powertrain. It is likely that the 500hp figure was just an estimate until now. Nothing to do with insurance.

from an online article:

“This technology plays directly into the hands of the enthusiast,” Coletti says. “The SuperCooler provides the edge for the driver, and it is done simply by taking advantage of the hardware that already exists in the vehicle.”

As a result of this cool technology, the SVT Lighting concept can give its driver as much as 50 transient horsepower for short bursts of 30-45 seconds and regenerate within 2 minutes under normal driving conditions. While its effect is similar to that of an aftermarket nitrous oxide system, the SuperCooler is completely self-contained, environmentally friendly and regenerative.

The SVT Lightning concept engine features a Lysholm, screw-type supercharger, paired with both an intercooler and the new SuperCooler system. The 32-valve, double-overhead-cam powerplant boasts Manley connecting rods, two fuel injectors per cylinder and high-performance heads similar to those on the limited-edition 2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R

In 30 - 45 Seconds you'll be going over 150 MPH. I'd say that's long enough.

I hope that extra 50HP for the lightning is on top of 500, so then we can see who blows who's doors off. You guys know when next year we can expect to see that bad boy? Just imagine towing a 550HP GT behind a 550HP F-150... and then racing the two! What do you think would happen if you hooked those two up for a tug-of-war?

anyone remember the 99 mustang cobra which was Originally rated at 320 horsepower. many owners were pissed to discover that their engines were often making less than 300 horsepower. thats why they rate the current cobras as 390hp and not 400hp which it's closer to. thats why they said the GT was 500hp and not 550hp to spear them any future embarrassment.

Except that Ford has officially announced that the GT has 550 HP.

2005 FORD GT WILL DELIVER 550 HORSEPOWER IN PRODUCTION TRIM

* The Ford GT's official horsepower rating has been set at 550 horsepower - more than 100 hp per liter.

* Car & Driver magazine clocked the Ford GT's 0-60 mph acceleration time at 3.3 seconds, and it reached a quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 128 mph.

DEARBORN, Mich. March 1, 2004 - Final certification testing of the 2005 Ford GT's powertrain shows that the car's 5.4-liter DOHC supercharged V-8 is producing an average of 550 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque - 50 more horsepower than preliminary estimates.

"With more than 100 horsepower per liter, the performance potential of the Ford GT is incredible," said John Coletti, Director, Ford SVT programs.

For its January 2004 cover story, "Judgment Day!" Car & Driver magazine clocked the Ford GT's 0-60 mph acceleration at 3.3 seconds, and it crossed a quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 128 mph. In the same test, Ferrari's $193,000 Challenge Stradale took four seconds to reach 60 mph, and was 0.8 seconds and 13 mph slower through the quarter-mile.

"The Ford GT is a showcase for Ford's design and engineering capability - and pure passion for building great cars," Coletti added.

The Ford GT's chassis is as sophisticated as its engine is powerful. The car is built around an exceptionally stiff but lightweight aluminum space frame and the suspension is a double-wishbone design with coil-over monotube dampers.

Aluminum is also used for the body panels. Other lightweight materials, including carbon fiber and magnesium, are used throughout the vehicle. The brakes are equally sophisticated, featuring four-piston Brembo calipers that grip massive 14-inch front and 13.2-inch rear cross-drilled and vented rotors. The gearbox is a rear-mounted Ricardo six-speed manual transaxle.

Ford recently announced that the winning golfer's prize package at the Ford Championship at Doral will now include the all-new Ford GT. Valued at more than $140,000, the Ford GT supercar will be the most valuable automobile prize in the history of the PGA Tour. And now, with 550hp, it's the most powerful.

The 2005 Ford GT's 5.4-liter V-8 will be built at Ford's Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Mich. The vehicle will be assembled at Ford's Wixom Assembly Plant in Wixom, Mich. Production will begin this summer with deliveries to dealerships beginning shortly after that.

The Ford GT's MSRP of $139,995 excludes optional equipment, destination and delivery charges, applicable taxes, and title, license and registration fees. Transaction prices are determined by authorized Ford dealers.

Honestly, I bet its still underrated heh. Think about it... if a 4.6L cobra engine puts out ~425 with a considerably inferior supercharger, and nowhere near the exhaust flow and the list of little things goes on and on... I would expect it to hit at least 550. It also made sense because Car and Driver ran it 0-60 in 3.3seconds and mid 11s in the quarter, which the Viper can't come that close (relatively) to even with 500 hp and equal weight.

Good find.
