Nu-Finish or Meguiar's 9/7/26

Hello. Without any knowledge of wax or this site, I bought into the Nu-Finish commercial and got some a year ago. It was very easy and quick to apply, and I have no complaints. The last time I applied was 3-4 months ago, the water still beads off, dirt washes away with water, and it looks shinier than all cars on my court.

However, I'm really into the dark, wet shine, and I've heard nothing but Meguiar's 9/7/26 on these boards. I want to try it, but I'm concerned with how long it'll last. Is this Meguiar's 9/7/26 combo something that'll need to be done every month or so, or will it last for months like Nu-Finish claims? I've been busy and don't plan on waxing more than 2-3 times/year.

Including all products you know of, what has the best, lasting results for a dark/wet shine? (Lasting= 4+months) Thanks.

Nu-Finish is not a very good wax, try this site http://www.autopia.org

I have 3 options that would look good and last:

1) Zaino TOPPED with Mother's Pure Carnub. or S100 other topper wax ( wax with no cleaners)

2) Klasse AIO / Klasse SG/ S100

3) Meg's 9/7/ NXT

I would be very suspicious of any company that makes claims about how long their product will last. There is no test that the normal consumer can do to verify if there is any protection on your paint. I always laugh at the Nu Finish commercial about putting a car through 52 consecutive car washes and how the water still beads. Most car wash detergents contain oils that are left behind on the paint that promote beading. Same goes for car wash detergents you buy at the auto parts store. Clean bare paint will bead so how do you know if there is any protection? YOU DON'T! You can only speculate. Beading alone is useless as a determining factor. There are other factors you can look at as well. After a wash does the paint feel slick? When you apply a quick detailer product does it wipe off as easy as it did when the car was freshly waxed or does it take more effort? You need to take all of these factors together and even then it is still a guess.

4 months is stretching it for any carnauba and probably at the upper limits of even polymers like Zaino. I have never tried Nu Finish and never will. Their claims of a once a year car polish are just rediculous. If they were true Nu Finish would be the only product on the shelf.

You are right about the length of time waxs/polishes claim to last. The sun is a big factor since most protectants, especially waxes, will melt in the heat and ultraviolet light. It is good to reapply a wax at least every 3 months for max protection. Polishes tend to last a little longer but I still do a good cleaning/polish every 3 months.

Now you guys can buy into the claims by Zaino or Meg's or the others but only experience with each will give you your answer. I'm not saying there is nothing better than Nu-finish but for the price I'll use it all the time.

Like I said, I used Nu-Finish polish about 3 months ago, and I wash it with nothing but water. The dirt just falls off, and yes, towels slide like they're on wheels.

The beading does have significance. When it rains, I've noticed the water on other cars without treatment tend to puddle up and slowly trickle down. On my car, the water rapidly trickles off.

Now I'm not saying that I'm buying all these claims that Nu-Finish is a once per year polish, but I'm not complaining of its results/durability either. I have used Meguiar's Gold Class in the past, and it was harder to apply, not as shiny, and it didn't last.

I just noticed this common Meguiar's 9, then 7, then 26 formula to produce show car shine, and I was impressed with the pictures. My Stang is silver, so I don't expect it to be as stunning as the black car pictures, but still worth a try. From that Autopia review site, it appears Meguiar's 26 wax is one of the poorer choices. I'm also not happy to see that some people are saying 9/7/26 lasts 4-6 weeks.

I'm still going to try a new method...maybe 9/7/NXT or one of the recommendations above to see if it's worth it. Still, I suppose it's not fair to compare 3 product treatments to one.

Sounds to me you are looking for a polymer durability with carnauba looks. If you find it be sure to let us all know because that is what everyone would like. It is really difficult to get both in one product. Polymers are very durable but, the common complaint is that the shine looks like plastic or saran wrap. Everyone likes the deep, wet glossy look of carnauba wax but, they fall short on durability. What a lot of people do is layer a carnauba wax on top of a polymer sealant to get the best of both worlds.

I still have my doubts that Nu Finish lasts even 3 months. As I have said, if you are happy with it that is all that matters. Just curious, why do you wash with just water? I would use a car soap as they do more than just clean. They contain lubricants and other ingredients that supend dirt particles and carry them away so that they don't scratch the paint as you wash.

Lastly, here are pics of my GT after the #9,#7,#26 combo

Yes, those are the pics that had me hooked awhile back, and why I started this thread to get more info. on that combo before I invest a day of my time. Car looks stunning by the way; probably wouldn't look as impressive on silver, but still.

How often do you do that combo, and if you do it by hand, how long does it take?

Oh, and no worries, I don't usually wash with water. Mainly, I was making the point that Nu-Finish did something, as in the past, dirt stuck to the paint.

In the winter, I found myself going to the quarter car washes to spray the salt/dirt junk off my car. Because it was well below freezing at times, I wanted to get done ASAP. Just spraying with water and using a spot free rinse, it looked better than using spray soap and water, as no soapy trails were left behind.

Another thing...what do you do to the headlight covers? I've always avoided touching them, concerned that I might fog them with any kind of chemical. Do you wax those too?

For #9,7,26 I usually do it about once every 6-8 weeks depending on the weather. If my car lived outside 24/7 I would probably do it every 4 weeks.

The time it takes varies according to what condition the paint is in when I start. If there are no swirls or other defects that need to be removed than I may skip #9 and go right to #7. That is going to be the determining factor in how long it takes. I can usually apply and remove 2 layers of #7 and 2 layers of #26 in a couple of hours. I usually do 2 layers of products to ensure complete coverage rather than an attempt at layering.

The headlight covers are new as I had just had them replaced in those pictures but, yes I do wax them. It will not cause them to haze.

I have always used Meguiar's products and I am very happy with them. I just used #9 and bought a bottle of NXT and boy does it look sweet. I haven't taken it out of the garage since Sunday though b/c of the rain. I want to have atleast one day where people can oooo and aaaaa at my car in all its glory :D , but for real #26 holds up pretty well for a carnuba/polymer blend. I think that I'm going to add a layer of #26 to my car tomorrow while it is still in the garage, for the wet glossy look. If you have any questions on Meguiar's products, definitely go to http://www.meguiarsonline.com Then click on Forums at the top. It is a great forum that is just beginning and you get feedback from pro's and meguiar employees on any questions that you have. I'm there religiously now asking questions and getting feedback. As for the durability of NXT it is too early to tell b/c it just came out and also I don't think that there is really a test to test durability. I wish somehow you just had to take some strip and place it on your paint for 5 seconds and if it changes to a certain color then its still protecting. That would be awesome.
