Posted this on svtperformance, wanted to see if there are some ppl here with some other opinions.

I have been told that with the Predator, you can only make global a/f adjustments, but with the SCT you can actually tune a flat line a/f. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanx in advance.

My .02...If you have to ask, you should just have a good Mustang tuner burn you a chip.

I've considered a chip tuner every time a new one comes out, but for the money and the fact that a Mustang shop has years and several "safe" tunes under their belts...

Problem is a chip can be detected very easily and could very well lead to warranty denial. The Predator or Superchip units leave no visable signs of installation and they let you flash the ECM back to stock prior to warranty work.

Plus... any tune that can be burned on a chip can also be loaded into the Predator or Superchips tuners!

I have a Superchips tuner and you cannot tune a/f. I primarily got mine to recalibrate my speedometer after installing 4.10s. It also removed the rev limiter and changed the fan setting to turn on at a lower temperature. I did notice a slight difference in performance but probably nothing more that 10-15 rwhp. Also, as mentioned you can change back to stock settings if you have to take your vehicle in for any warranty work.

Before I found the dealer I use now, I would always just take the chip out in the parking lot. It was not that hard to do, just a pain doing it.

Yes, but if you were to bring your car in for serious drivetrain repair, like a burnt piston or ejected rod, the first thing they will do is look at that J3 port on your ECM. They'll notice the protective coating has been scraped off the contacts.

"Sorry sir, but we're going to have to void your powertrasin warranty. We've found evidence of an aftermarket performance chip installation."

Earlier (n/a) cobras showed much lower power gains because it's normally aspirated, you probably already have som other upgrades (exhaust), and there isn't much room to increase timing or lean the air/fuel.
You have a Superchips 1725 tuner. This makes great gains on the 03 Cobra, and has programs for stock pulleys and upgraded pulleys. If you plugged your tuner into an 03 cobra the options would change once the tuner "saw" what it was plugged into.
Meat is talking about a tuner with a custom flash from Superchips Custom.
Superchips Inc and Superchips Custom are sister companies, but two separate entities.

This is absolutely true, and is the reason I have two PCM's =o)
The virgin stocker is safe and sound under my bed =o)

Of course, a flash that can be returned to stock is also a solution to the warranty "problem"

You can do anything you want to the a/f values with the SCT stuff. Plus, chip or PCM reflash, you have to clean off that port...

Wrong! The J3 port is on the ECM itself and has a protective coating that requires removal before you can install a chip. The SCT & Predator tuners work their magic via the ODB-II port under the dash. Plug-N-play brother and no scrapin' required!

The Superchips Inc, 1725 also works like this.....it flashes throught the OBD2 port and can be returned to stock at anytime =o)
No scrapie, scrapie =o)

I'm not sure what your asking here? If the comp is removed you can't talk to it via the OBD-II port.

Damnit...I thought we we're on an agreeing roll here.....=o)

What you said is actually incorrect...
If I have a PCM in my hand, I can still tune without touching the J3 port.
I plug the main harness side of the PCM into my little benchtop OBD2 port harness (proprietary stuff) and I flash away =o)
It mimics being in the car with a button for the ignition and everything.

Now that the benefits of a hand-held tuner, or flash tuner, over a chip have been discussed, how about getting back to the original question?

I see a number of hand-held tuners out there. AFM, Saleen, Superchips, Diablo, etc. Which one is the best?

Inquiring minds want to know.

My opinion (and it is an educated one) is that Superchips and SCT have the best stuff available.
The superchips 1725 tuner has the best "out of the box" pulley program.
If you want a flat out dynotuned custom, go to superchips custom (or one of their dealers). They can make a custom file and put it in a tuner.

The one with the best customer support! :flag:

I bought my Predator from James at RWTD (www.runninwiththedevil.com). I paid $419 for it and that included shipping it to my door. James provides free custome tunes for as long as you own the Predator too!

P.S. Vic.... What part of my previous post was incorrect? Maybe YOU have the ability to talk to an ECM while it is out of the vehicle because you have access to the "proprietary stuff"...but us average garage tuners are unable to talk to the ECM once it has been removed from the car!

A good resourceful tuner should be able to do this. It's something that can be built easily.
