Failed my vehicle inspection....

I got my car inspected yesterday...........and failed . It actually failed for two reasons. 1) Exhaust leak at the drivers side collector. This is because I had to install the damn stock h-pipe the other day to pass emissions, and the flange didn't seal right. I didn't have time to fix it, because I had to drive back to school. I was hoping he would miss it since it wasn't very loud, but of course he didn't. 2) I need a new pass side wheel bearing. He said the drivers side was pretty shotty too, but it was passable.

What's awesome though is that I passed my emissions, since I had all the stock emissions stuff there. I guess it didn't matter for emissions that it was leaking ? Oh well, that is a simple fix. I just need to loosen everything up again and reposition it, I just didn't have time before I had to leave. Wheel bearings won't be hard to do either, I just have a question about what to buy.

I planned on doing both sides right away, getting the inner/outer bearings and seals for both sides. Is that all I need for it? I called Auto Zone(since Jesse James recommends it, lol ), but they had either some name brand for like 20 bucks plus seals for each side, or Auto Zone brand for like 10 bucks plus seals. Is this a part where you get what you pay for, or can I just throw some replacements in it? I relize they are important, but was just wondering.

Also, while I am at it, I wanted to plan ahead. I plan on lowering my car in the near future, and was just wondering if I need a better wheel bearing for that reason. If so, I think I would like to get it now and plan ahead for lowering it.

don't cheap out on the bearings IMHO as you probably won't need to do them again for many years. and, no, they're is not a special bearing for lowered vehicles.

I was thinking that too. So I am going to have to dish out 50 bucks for that, and then another 20 for an inspection. Damn. I wasn't sure whether different bearings were necessary for the lowered stance/cent of gravity. What is a good brand for wheel bearings, and for packing grease?

yeah, it's a bummer when the little repairs get ya. i'd stick to a reputable company like timken for the bearings and just about any industrial grease should suffice for packing them up. although, maybe the bearings will be packed when you get them :shurg:, it's been a while since i've bought bearings.

anybody know who makes the oem ford bearing?

Oh yeah, Auto Zone said they carry the Timken's.

I like timken bearings,there quality is bar none one of the best, That's all I purchase at work for my equipement, Autozone does sell them,just make sure you pack your bearings real good.

it just sucks you have to get inspected like that.... i only have emissions testing....

hahahaha, here in texas, you just have to take it to some run down place that does "inspections" and they just look at your car, and they start putting the sticker on your car, im glad i live in this wonderful state!!

You may need to replace the inner and outer races if they don't look pristine. You'll need a large brass drift to install the new races. I picked up two large brass drifts at Harbor Freight for $10.

Get the bearings (Timken of course) and they will come with new outer races. Also get new seals. You should always get new seals. Thats it. Unless you feel like changing your brakes while your down there!!!! ha ha

Do you know how to pack bearings properly? There are a few ways if you don't. I just use the palm of my hand and a wad of grease. Or you can buy a bearing packer.

do the bearings make noise, or is the wheel wobbly? The last brake job guy might not have tighted the wheel bearing nut properly. I would check that before you go replacing bearings.
