Anyone ever heard of this type of dyno?

I had the pleasure/displeasure of some free runs on one this weekend. These guys were going to charge 55$ for 3 runs, and I've been dying to get on one so I offered to be first in line at the car show they were setting up shop at.

They said 5 more mins about 5 times and about 2hrs after starting to assemble the dyno they were ready to go. I put the car up there, they strapped me down, and they told me what to do. First pull they told me I had 472ft/lbs torque. I proceeded to tell them they were crazy and it was impossible. What the hell was the dyno smokin? Anyway they said I have 205 rwhp and 427 lbs torque. I seriously laughed in their face. I proceeded to tell them factory ratings were 305 lbs and I would be looking for somewhere around 275 lbs or more. I would have also been extremely happy with 250rwhp(tell me if I'm crazy). So they fiddle with it over and over, and I do run after run. About 7-8 runs into it they said they wouldn't charge me since this is new equipment and they didn't know what they were doin.

So this guy proceeds to tell me that the dyno figures in the factory weight, drag coefficient, and the supposed hp needed to travel 55mph into some mathematical calculation to determine a true hp rating. I continued to tell him there is no way in hell that my car has only 205hp, not to mention 472lbs torque.

They keep messin with it and they get the numbers more inline. 211rwhp and 250lbs torque. Am I crazy or is this stupid low?

Does anyone know what this would be in comparisson to a dynojet? I told them factory rwhp should be 225-230 and they need to take out those "simulations". They said they did and came up with the same numbers but I'm not buying it.

Anyway they said I could do a 1/4 on the dyno. I've never seen this before so I give it a shot. I feather out at 3000rpm and run it hard, catch 2nd, then 3rd on the dyno(they had me strapped down pretty damn good). I finish the 1/4 in 14.4x

I did two more runs like that - on the dyno - one was 14.149 and the better:

60ft 2.030 - 32.628
330ft 5.820 - 51.588
660ft 9.019 - 78.048
1000 11.776 - 89.116
1/4 14.129 - 96.573

Am I to believe a 3600lb car will do the quarter in 14.1 with 205-211rwhp? What gives, I was pretty p'od until the they said it would be free.

I have a video - my friend didn't hit record in time and what you see is 2nd gear and the shift to 3rd, then to the end of the run. I never went into 4th on the 3rd(best) run.

So what am I supposed to think about this dyno, numbers, and could I expect to see 250rwhp? I was ok with the 14.1 1/4 but I would love to see 13.9.

WTF. This this thing supposedly gives a bstimate of rear
wheel HP, or flywheel HP, or something.
Why do those measurements depend on how much HP the car needs to do 55mph?? Example, put the same engine-tranny-etc, in a heavier, larger airdrag vehicle,, the
engine measurement should be the same.
 
Ok from reading about the mustang dyno further It appears there is a 10-15% difference between them and a dynojet on average. So my power really isn't that bad I guess. Regardlessof that, the first number they gave me was 472lbs torque so yes, they were definately morons.

you think the load wll be the same on mustang than it is in a cube van with a mustang drive train?

Give your head a shake. There is a reason why almost every reliable and respectable tuner prefers to tune on a MD.
 
So the remaining questions are,

What could I guesstimate my power to be? and Can I count on the 1/4 time to be reasonably accurate, or at least more accurate than a crappy g-tech?

Btw the temp on the dyno machine was reading 108F... it was very hot and humid, easily 90F out.

At a car show in a suburb of Atlanta, Ga. I don't know the guys that have it, but they seemed to be good guys. Whats the reason?

The guys really weren't morons but they were totally unprepaired. They spent much of the setup time on the phone with some sort of tech support. And I also spoke with them about the one day training class they attended and how they had no problems there ;)

and get a certain power measurement,
.....why does the engine care what vehicle it
eventually ends up in???

to answer your question, elaborate on what
you mean by 'load'.
A heavy, large airdrag vehicle will not, with the same engine, accel as fast as a car,,, but,,,.. at the same RPM,
same engine should put out same WOT power.

Think of it this way...you make a certain amount of power at the enginge (flywheel)...a dynojet tells you your horsepower at the rear wheels after drivetrain loss...think of that measurment like the car is in a vacuum with only the drivetrain effecting power(i know temp, etc can effect readings, but that can be corrected)...the mustang dyno then takes the car out of the vacuum and puts it on the ground taking into account vehicle weight and other factors...this measures the amount of horsepower actually being put to the ground...yes, the same engine and drivetrain in 2 different vehicles should measure the same on a dynojet, but when weight and such is taken into account, more power can be lost by those variables
 
I understand how they work now and if you just want the output of your engine minus drivetrain then get on a dynojet or if you want to know true to the ground numbers in real world situations then get on a mustang dyno.

How accurate are the 1/4 times on a dyno and does anyone have a dynojet guestimate of my power given it was 211/250 on the mustang dyno?

the reason dj was asking about where it was, is there is one close to us, & they were doing a dyno day/car show recently.

if you want your flywheel hp numbers add 30% to your rwhp number & that's almost exactly it. i know because i've seen my shop dyno a engine on a engine dyno. then they put it in a car & put it on their chassis dyno (mustang dyno) & it was within 3 hp of the engine dyno :nice:

btw- i wouldn't put much faith in the 1/4 mi run, because you have to be used to being on it, in order to get a decent takeoff on them
 
Hello All,

I use a Mustang Dyne at my shop for tuning. It is a very good dyne for tuning purposes and does give extremely accurate numbers. It is so accurate that it can give ET's within a .10 of actual at the track.

The reason your first tq. number was so far off is most likely the tach signal or you did the pull in some gear other than 1:1. If you dyno the car against the eddy current brake in a lower gear then your tq. is going to show higher due to the mult. of the gears in the tranny.

The dyne's do take some time to learn how to use. I would suspect that they were just having teething issues with their dyne.

The HP @50mph number is only used to calculate the frontal area of the vehicle to compensate for wind load as your going down the road. This is calculated in a wind tunnel and based on a flat windless road situation.

It is all of these factors that allow the Mustang Dyne to calculate the ET's so well. The main reason why this dyne and other like it are so much better for tuning is the fact that they can be operated in steady state. In other words they can hold the vehicle back to a specific RPM so that you can tune the entire RPM and load range instead of just WOT pulls.

i think that 30% for engine hp is way too much. take a mach 1 for example. they are rated 305-310 hp from the factory. put it on the dynojet they put down about 270-275rwhp stock. if you take 275rwhp and add 30% it would be almost 360 hp.......way over the factory rate. mine would be even more putting me close to 03 cobra power.

that has to be way off.:shrug:

Why do you have to come in here and rain on my parade. I made about 260 on mustang dyno so that puts me at 338 at the engine. I was happy with my fantasy numbers. You bastid. :D
